Signage off the road would be helpful, as we arrived in the dark & couldn't see where the site was.
We woke up to see turquoise lake Pukaki & snowcapped mountains.
Wild & windy, yet beautiful.

Long drive down from main road, out the back of a tucked away village.
Short walk to beach from site.
Sheltered from sea wind with tall trees.
Handy if heading to or from Christchurch.

Great site overlooking Porpoise Bay.
A short drive round from Curio Bay, where freedom camping is prohibited.
There is some hard road, but otherwise muddy grass; no problem as we were the only van.
Rubbish can be left here.

Drove to the site & saw sign saying it was closed for winter.
Further unwelcome signage means we will not be camping there in future.
Not at all helpful, as quite a drive from the main road.

Drove to the site & saw sign saying it was closed for winter.
A sign on the main road, would have been helpful, as this was a long & unnecessary drive.

What a stunning place to park up for the night!
We felt on top of the world!
It is a long slow drive but well worth the view.
We were the only van there, joined later by the gritter, as it started to snow.
The road was fine to drive down in the morning, despite the snowfall.
Some cars stopped off for photos both in the evening & the morning.
This could be irritating in season.

Worth the long drive for the clean air & sheltered camp in the trees.
We tucked our van into the trees, & were careful to stay out of the mud.
There is a simple toilet.

Lovely setting, within easy drive of airport.
Quiet & out the way, facing huge playing fields.
Parking for 5 vans.
Outside tap & sink & clean toilets with paper.

Hired a Chaser campervan from Christchurch.
Online booking was relatively easy & arrangement of out of hours pick up was appreciated. We expected fuel & water tanks to be full, all van parts working, & van to be clean. Actually, there was no water, the light above the hob did not work, neither did the rear window heater or the rear window wiper, the table, crockery & cutlery were dirty. Not at all helpful & particularly disappointing when collecting the van in the dark & after a 28 hour flight. Bedding & towels for 4 was welcome & used against the cold. Most vehicles have a heater for passengers in the back. This one did not, so the sleeping area of the van was extremely cold. We had a great week travelling around South Island & there was nowhere the van could not go. We sought out freedom camp sites that were off the beaten track, & often found ourselves the only ones there. However, advertised fuel consumption was seriously understated, costing us 3 times our budget. The drop off was quick & the shuttle to the airport is a great service.
