We had a great experience travelling around both islands in our Toyota campervan we named 'Toby'.
Toby the Toyota (don't ask). He was comfy to sleep in and was kitted out with everything we needed. Although not the newest model and with over 300,000 km on the clock, he was very reliable and powerful enough to get up a hill in fifth gear. Graham and Susan were great at communicating via email to get everything sorted, included a tent on our request and dropped the campervan to us in Queenstown for a reasonable fee. My partner lost his wallet during out trip and Graham was very helpful in making sure he was reunited with it. Graham was always on hand to reassure us both on this occasion and when we had to ask how to check the oil mid way through our journey. The only issue we had came at the end of our 16 day trip when returning Toby. There was a small dent on the back which we had not noticed and were unaware of causing. We got charged $400 for this which was disappointing as we didn't feel it needed a new panel, however we can appreciate their decision and realise they have to cover costs of repairs regardless of fault. Overall, big thumbs up for Campa South and Toby the Toyota.
Hi Rachael. Thanks for the kind words and we're really glad Toby ran well for you. Our Toyota campervans are absolutely the best and seldom give us or our renters any problems. We're also really sorry for the dent in the door and we suspect it occurred sometime while the van was parked up either in a shopping centre or a camping spot when you weren't close by. You are quite right that the van doesn't need a new panel, however, medium size dents do occur and they must be attended to with some panel repair and painting. Often this type of repair can be quite expensive but in your case we reduced the amount somewhat to help your budget. Please approach your travel insurance as they usually cover these sorts of things and of course we will be happy to provide documentation to support your claim.
Hope you make it back to NZ again soon

What an amazing place to camp for the night.
Right next to Lake Hawea, couldn't have been better! Basic toilets however covered kitchen with running water which was useful when it rained.

Great place to spend a couple of nights if you want to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, just wish we'd had a bit longer to do a bit more exploring of the area and other walks available.
Good facilities. Recommend.

I agree with others that this place is really difficult to rate.
Perfect for us as we wanted something central to go out in Wellington and really close to the ferry port. Downsides are that you are basically just camping in a car park in the city centre. This would have been ok had there been a toilet however the closest public toilet is a 5-10 minute walk. Not great if you need a wee in the middle of the night. You have to pay at a ticket machine and it doesn't accept notes so you either need lots of change or have to use your card.

Stayed here for a night in November, what a beautiful campsite.
Not the easiest of drives down the gravel road to get there however definitely worth it. Basic toilets and no frills but what an amazing view to wake up to. Be careful of parking on the mud if it's raining as we got stuck. One other tent but felt like we were the only ones there.

Elaine Bay was out favourite place to stay on our trip.
What an amazing view and a good place to explore the Marlborough Sounds from. Basic toilets however they are kept clean. No drinking water so needs to be boiled. The drive there is pretty difficult in a camper van and is a good hour and a bit off the state highway however couldn't have been more worth it!
