Super and helpful friendly people, unbeatably convenient stopover location, and you wake up to spectacular views.
Peaceful, family vibe, clean bathrooms and kitchens (random bonus - the bathroom played music from one stall so you have some tunes while you do your business : ). Both times we showed up super late and they managed to places us right on the water front, so we opened up the back of our van and woke up to lapping water. The only reason it’s not a full 10 is that since you’re right on the main road you hear cars through the night/day. We loved this spot!
Thanks for the informative and honest review Francis. A great summary of what Motutere has to offer!

We stayed here because other campgrounds were full.
The positive side: bathroom and kitchen facilities are new and clean. It’s basically a glorified parking lot, but clean and fine. However, due to the rudeness of the woman at the front desk I wouldn’t pay them money again. We arrived late and parked in the lot, paid for a night and a ride up to the crossing. After the (glorious!) hike the next day we came back to a practically empty campground. We’d lost the bathroom code and went to get it from her. She refused saying our checkout time had expired. There were maybe 3 other people there and we had just given her $100 the day before. It was insulting and unnecessarily rude. There are many other much more charming spots in the area, I suggest going elsewhere.
Yes we do not let guest who have checked out use the bathrooms as you have not paid to use the facilities that day or night. Your dont need to like the place, our comments state what a lovely place we have we small and located at the foothills of the volcanoes.
