This is a necessity only stop over.
So many people are here just for the night before starting a hike or bike ride. Arrive early and be prepared to defend your space. We were in an already tight campsite with 4 others and our cars were all parked in by 2 rude and late arriving vans who just rolled in and parked right on top of us. Do yourself a favour if you camp here, and park right by the exit so you can get out in the morning! Late December is mayhem at this campsite!

Such a cosy, comfy and friendly place to stay.
More like staying with your Aunty who has a whole bunch of space for camping and some sweet cabins and amenities to use! They even provide towels to use in the showers! Good clean pool, indoor and outdoor cooking facilities and sinks, laundry, chickens and peacocks, $30 for 2 on a powered site and $1 unlimited WiFi! The best motor camp we’ve stayed in in the South Island! Such friendly owners too.
It’s a small place, and it filled up pretty quickly. We arrived just before 5pm ahead of a steady flow of other vehicles. By 8pm it was quite full.

A perfect little one night stopover spot.
Two large grassed shady areas, close to the river, 2 clean drop toilets, close to road, but not too noisy.
I don’t know why people complain so much about these free sites! Of course drop toilets smell! When it’s a free site, and you’ve got a clean loo to use, then its perfect!

Such a great spot!
Follow the dirt road to the beach on the northern side of the bridge. Not sure how others struggled to find it. As previously advised- no camping directly at the beach, but PLENTY of space everywhere else. There’s spots to camp along the river as well as nestled in the shady pines right up closer to the beach. Beautiful spot, friendly locals. Please do the right thing and read the signs for where you can & can't camp so this spot can be kept as a free camp site!

A great spot for an overnighter in a self contained vehicle.
Signs at these coastal car parks state the maximum number of vehicles allowed to stay at each place, so please respect this. Police drove past overnight to check numbers and Kapiti council come around in the morning to check certification of self containment.
One ignorant camper who didn’t read the sign decided to park up at 11.15pm and there were already the max of 2 campers parked. This resulted in police asking the third vehicle to move on... at nearly midnight.
Lots of traffic and early morning noise as to be expected. Lots of other campers driving through to check the signs before moving on too.

An excellent spot right at the start of Abel Tasman.
Sparkling clean amenities, great laundry, big clean kitchen with heaps of fridge/freezer space and multiple toasters/kettles/microwaves. Friendly staff, hiking, kayaks, water taxis, guided single and multi day tours, small shop and cafe/bar. $40 per night powered site for 2, $1 per 6 minute shower, $3 per load clothes washing (free detergent). It’s definitely expensive, but worth the price. Gotta bear in mind that this is all locally run, and to even have facilities out here in the first place costs a lot of money, so I don’t mind paying the rates to support the locals and keep places like this in business. There’s free day parking across the road too if you just want to hire kayaks/get a water taxi to do some walks for the day.
