Rented an all wheel drive subara for 3 weeks Auckland to Christchurch in June/July 2010 and car and service from Ace was excellent.
Car was older but I knew that when I rented it and it never missed a beat the whole time. Only issue was not being able to leave the car at the airport on day of departure.

First day we tried to go skiing at Cardrona we got to the entrance and the sign said we needed snow chains but there was nobody there to hire/fit them.
We drove back to Wanaka and hired some chains and then went back to the Cardrona sales office, where we had been the day before when they had given us no info. Found out then that there is a guy halfway up the hill that hires and fits snow chains. Too windy so we decided to go back next day. Advice for first timers - hire your ski clothes in wanaka as it takes hours to get organised in their hire shop and get through the crowded rush. Hire skis etc at the mountain. I was exhausted by the time we got our family organised. Also see if you can buy lift passes etc in town to beat the crowds.

Hired a Camry for 2 weeks in August/September 2008 and the whole experience from original emails to the final drop-off was nothing but perfect.
Email responses to questions were fast, they were prompt when they picked me up from the motel in the morning and the car was in excellent condition. They even made sure our drop off at the airport was easy. I would recommend this company to anyone and will definately use them again for our next holiday in NZ this year. Also, price was very competitive.
