We usually do unpowered or powered sites while traveling around NZ, but decided to opt for a kitchen cabin this time.
Arrived late but the staff were really friendly. 5 mins drive to Napier centre, clean facilities and nice room. 24hour reception area, and large communal kitchen and outdoor area. However, some points off as the wifi was not working at all, even though it was free, and the tv didn't work either. Turned on the bedroom lights which blew out seconds later too. I did visit reception to see what was going on, but was told that work is being done in the area we had rented, so everyone was having issues. There was nothing she could do about it till the manager came in the morning. Tried at half 9 the next morning but still didn't work. Was woken up at 6.30am as the walls are thin and could hear people walking around and making brekkie in the next room. The pool is lukewarm, and didn't end up using it in the end. And in my opinion, it was very overpriced.

This place is a gem!
The friendly owners were really lovely and Jesse went out of his way to accommodate us. Even let us park on the gravel as it was heavy rain. He leaves the cowshed, (cafe which was closed, being the cold season) open 24hours. A place to use the free and fast wifi, to charge your gears and to sit and have your meals. Campers can self check in and they had a deal going. 3 nights for $30pp so we stayed for 3. I'm glad we did too. Showers were fantastic and free, toilets were clean, and kitchen very small. Only 2 cooking elements but are welcome to use your cooker in there if you have one. Beautiful dining area and large outdoor seating area as well. This place is amazing. Brown water here but theres a sign that explains all about it. The owners are not always there, some things work on an honesty box system. Even had homebaked goods on the counter. Just leave the money in the box. Although a group of foreigners claimed they had no money to pay for things they had taken/used/eaten. Here's some advice for visitors to this country: please don't take Kiwi hospitality for granted, as it could ruin it for all of us. Clean up after yourselves, its not that hard! And learn what the word honesty means. It's very important.

Big camping ground, had booked a riverfront site prior to arrival but on arrival the staff member said he had given our spot away to someone else so put us in the corner on the riverfront as there were
no more spots available. But the view was fantastic and right on the Waitangi river so I was happy with our space. We had our own picnic table too which was a bonus. Kitchen was quite small and it was very busy when we stayed. The washing up area is tiny too, (separate area from the cooking area) for such a big campsite. Everyone was crammed in doing their dishes. The showers were fantastic though and toilets were clean. I had trouble connecting to the wifi and it kept dropping out.

Office was not opened so we just set up camp in a spot.
Really wanted to use the wifi but the manager didn't get in till late afternoon. Manager was very friendly and helpful with what to see and do around the area and this holiday park is situated right by a beautiful beach. Facilities were good, although hot water from the kitchen zip didn't heat up as much as it should've. Lots of elements for cooking. Showers were high pressured but you have to keep pushing a button to keep water flowing. and toilets were clean. Paid $17pp. I eventually paid for wifi but it wasn't good at all and hardly ever connected. I would still recommend this place and stay again.

I thought Miranda was actually a small town but there is no town.
However, they do have an onsite shop, there is just the one hot pool, although next door is another pool complex (extra charge) which has hot and cold pools. Also next door is a takeaways bar you can order from too. The facilities at Miranda Park were fantastic! Very clean and plenty of toilets and showers. Huge kitchen with plenty of room for cooking. They also have activities around the park; mini golf, trike rides I think its called? And lots of things to do for kids as well. The pool is the feature of this place though and it didn't disappoint. We loved the pool! Very relaxing. Our unpowered site was huge and we had our own picnic table too. Friendly staff at reception, this place has it all.

Other then having to pay for wifi, this place was awesome!
Lots of showers and toilets, very clean and tidy, even the laundry area is nice. Kitchen is a bit small, 1 big dining table for everyone and a small tv area considering how large the park is. Quite a few people here but not that busy. We had a lovely spot to park the van. Over the fence was the estuary and our own picnic table on our site. Friendly staff, friendly neighbours beside us. Would definitely go back.
Thank you for your review and feedback, we appreciate your taking the time to tell us about your stay here. We have a variety of areas available for camping here : close to the beach with a smaller facilities block or away from the beach with the newer larger facilities block, that has a larger kitchen and lounge area. Glad to hear that you found a great spot to camp.

It's just basically a car park but right by the estuary and town just over the bridge.
Has a toilet but nothing else. Didn't mind as it was free and convenient and very quiet when we stayed.

This place is awesome!
And it's free! Close to town and right in front of a beautiful beach with awesome sunsets! What more could you ask for. One of my favourite spots in NZ.

I love freedom camping!
Go get a permit from places mentioned in other comments. We got ours from the Gisborne District Council. Paid $24 for 7 days which was reasonable. Very packed and hard to find a spot in peak season, but beautiful beach. You must have your own chemical toilet. Could not get reception on my mobile there, but great place to camp.

Hey, it's free and close to city centre, beautiful walks here and basically on the trout pools.
But smelly gross toilet and lots of noise from kayakers as this is their base. still, it was free and convenient. Quite a few people here when we stayed too.

This place is breathtaking.
I loved this campground. Cold showers and clean toilets on a DOC site. Fantastic. Also not far from the main road and close to Cape Reinga. They have separate areas for tents and campers. But plenty of room for everyone. Great swimming, beautiful views and beach. This was one of my favourite sites to stay while touring NZ for 6 months. Definitely gets packed in summer.

Stayed for 2 nights here on the way to Cape Reinga.
Wish I had read the reviews first but this place is so run down! Most of the spots close to the beach were taken up by permanent caravans with studios/flats built onto them. All of which looked dirty. Showers were the worst. 50c for a hot shower. There were 3 of us at the time and even though we put money in, all were cold. No hot water! Water pressure was really non existent to say the least. Small kitchen but large covered outdoor dining area. Toilets were not clean. Short stroll past the permanent caravans down to the beach. Very beautiful beach though. They have a pool too (extra cost) but we didn't use it. Staff tried to charge us twice as they said we didn't pay for the first night. Luckily I had my receipt. Plus i needed a touch key to open the gate, from reception, when you pay....to get into the campgrounds 😒

I really enjoyed this campsite.
A young man and lady checked us in, very friendly people. The amenities and facilities are limited but we had a really nice walk through the bush that overlooked the lake and a bench seat that overlooked a beautiful beach. Its a quick walk through the pine trees to the beach. Paid $15pp and were allowed our pick of any site. Powered or unpowered. They have a chill out room where you can charge your stuff or watch TV. Showers $1 for 5 mins but they were nice showers. Zip for hot water in the kitchen. The kitchen is quite small and they only had 2 hotplates when we were there. Another lady was waiting to cook dinner too. They also have a small covered outdoor dining area. No wifi and very limited reception.

Very basic facilities and in my opinion, overpriced.
Dirty toilets and not enough showers. 5 mins walk to beach. I guess they can charge that whatever they like as this is really the only place for tent/unpowered sites for a while. Even the small cabins look a bit spooky and when we stayed, a large group partied through the night. They have an onsite caravan though, that sells takeaways. the food was fantastic!

Stayed in a non powered site for 2 people.
Staff were friendly but that's about it. We were under willow trees where the sap was dropping. We ended up putting a tent up to reserve our spot, when we came back the groundskeeper had moved it because he was mowing the lawns - I didn't mind that though. The toilets and showers are outdated and in need of some refurbishment. toilet stalls are very small and dirty, showers were very dirty. Small laundry with 2 washers and a dryer. kitchen & dining area was small but had a toaster, kettle and fridge. There are also toilets and showers on the opposite side of the grounds, which smelt horrible! our site was by the creek and at night, the people who live in the flats on the other side of the creek, were shining torches right into our van and looking for a way to get across the creek, it seemed. It was about 10pm at night. It was quite scary as we were the only ones under the trees in that area. No neighbours. in my opinion the facilities were not great and I wouldn't stay there again.

I enjoyed this campsite.
$2 for unlimited wifi, recycling bins, sensor lights for toilets. showers and toilets very clean. Very friendly owner who told us about the activities and attractions around Hokitika. Kitchen very clean but not well equipped and quite small. Lounge and dining area also small but it wasn't busy when we were there. Our site was right next to the train tracks, but the owner told us what time the train would go past so it didn't surprise us. laundry was reasonably priced. It was great just to chill out, relax and meet some good people. also, local guy on site sells food and carvings and is also very friendly. I think i just liked the vibe of the place too.

Paid $50 for 2 per night for an unpowered site.
Very spacious and it was busy but didn't seem packed. Showers were lovely and they have a great laundry area too. The campsites seemed to be divided up into cute lil names and we stayed in the area called Paradise. Toilets in this area were not very clean and the toilet block is very small. 1 wash basin and 4 toilets in this particular area, but more toilets near the laundry and shower Block. really close location to start the cathedral cove walk and situated right on a beautiful beach. also the walk down the beach to the right, takes you up the hill to a lookout. large kitchen and covered outdoor seating, friendly and helpful staff with an onsite shop as well. also has internet area and wifi, and a nicely decorated tree that lights up at night.
I really enjoyed our stay here, its a beautiful resort, and would definitely come back again. Stayed 2 nights.

Arrived late but had no trouble with check in.
Lady in reception wasn't overly-welcoming but it was raining and the drive was quite long from where we had come from, so i just wanted to get to our pitch. They have timed showers, (short 4 mins?) and there were only 2. so there was a short wait to use them. Kitchen was quite big and there are a few pots to use as well as cutlery, plates and cooking utensils. table in kitchen and also have a covered outdoor bbq and seating area which was nice. Cameras in the kitchen area. Toilets were clean. We weren't told about the TV area so didn't realise they had one till after we left. Pretty basic facilities but reasonably priced. Didn't manage to have a look around the grounds due to rain but I would stay here again.

DOC site, with 2 flushable toilets.
About a 15-20min drive out of Picton. Little alcoves to drive into for shelter from the wind and plenty of space for everyone as this place is huge! Also picnic tables scattered around. The views are amazing and it was hard to find in the dark but just after the bridge on the left hand side turn in. It was definitely worth the drive.
