Very unique site having driven through lots of residential roads this oasis appears.
Right on the beach which you get to down stairs called "Jacobs Ladder". Excellent facilities all round.

Stayed for one night after reading reviews.
Brilliant site for the ferry. We arrived about 6.00pm and it was half full. Within an hour there was no room left...so get there ASAP. As this is part of the Marine Reserve it had an information centre with probably the best public toilets we encountered yet. The hand dryer even worked and it had that amazing glowing purple light thing on your hands.
It's at the very well named Happy Valley Road.

Well worth passing a few other sites for.
Loads of room right on the beach. Grab a pitch at the sea front as we decided not to block a few peoples view only to find 30 minutes later two motorhomes blocked our view. This was despite lots of space elsewhere.

Other reviews do not do this location justice.
Yes it's a car park...right on the fork of the two rivers going into the sea. You can walk to any part of Gisborne. We went to the botanical gardens and then back through the main streets with every type of food available.
Lovely city and incredible spot for freedom camping.
Toilets were unfortunately poor so lost a point.

This is a basic campsite which has a pay in envelope set up.
It's now $12.50 per person whether you are in a tent or a Motorhome. Lovely setting very close to the beach but no views.
It's run by the Township of Okarito so the money goes to a good cause. But they have no supervision.
The down side is you pick and choose your own spot so when busy you could have some neighbour issues.
Otherwise a good site especially if you like birding.

Read a couple of reviews from the UK from a few years back.
Cannot understand what they are on about. Very friendly staff and extremely helpful. Good facilities all round and for the only site in Havelock it was reasonably priced. Went to the Mussel Pot for great meal and a longish walk around the marina which is also a nature reserve.

We went to this site as one of the reviews said it was just 16 or 18k from the airport.
Well it's about 28k but well worth the drive. Incredible route over the mountains to get there.
Lovely quiet little site and flat. Stunning views over the bay.

We went to every site in Picton and found this was by far the best.
No traffic like some of the others and well worth the 5 minute drive to get out of the busy Picton Harbour.
The site is very spacious and surrounded by stunning hillside.
Just 10 minute walk to Waikawa Marina with the Jolly Roger as a good watering hole overlooking the boats.

We could have stopped at Moray Terrace which has stunning harbour bay views and a toilet.
However we chanced it and went onwards up to this clifftop site next to their golf course.
Just two Motorhomes including us stayed the night. Incredible sunset and a 2k stroll along a beach we had all to ourselves. Freedom camping at its best. Passed Moray Terrace on the way back. It was packed even in mid March.

We stayed two nights as under advisement we were told it's best to go to Milford Sounds on an organised day trip.
We chose the small group one and it was the right choice for us pensioners. It's a long windy trek and we had a better experience in the mini bus.
For a big site the Lakeview was excellent. A short stroll along the front to the town and walks plus the bird sanctuary just a few minutes in the other direction. Could not fault it.

This is the only free site close to Farewell Spit and is brilliant if you are a seasoned freedom camper.
The weather was awful with rain and the tide coming in...plus the river runs into the sea a few feet away. Half the site was flooded. Provided whoever is responsible for maintaining this site puts some more gravel down it will remain a little gem for a few more years.. never saw a portaloo??
