Quiet doc campsite a short 10 min drive from Whitianga.
The campsite is bordered by dense rainforest and a large stream. There is a field near the wardens office which has hook ups for motor homes and then a little further down the track are a couple of grassy fields with basic, but okay toilets, showers and sinks. There is also a BBQ shelter. The waterfall is 1.5 hours walk, which we alas didn't do, but I did explore in the dark and followed an overgrown trail which leaves the grit road on the left hand side if you're walking from the wardens office back to the camping area just after the bridge. It was signposted to the mines. About 3 mins from the grit track is a damp bank teeming in glow worms.

Small site with excellent facilities for children.
Our 5 year old daughter loved the playground and trampoline and we made use of the BBQ and the small pool. Showers were good. Everywhere was very clean and well maintained. The lady in reception was really lovely and welcoming and helped book our boat trip. there is also an excellent playground at the harbour where the boat trips leave.

Wow. We loved it here.
This was our first night in nz in our camper van. It was a really special place to stay. The campground is quiet and very well maintained right on the beach. it is situated along the length of the beach in a beautiful wide sandy bay backed by low lying sand dunes. There is a pleasant walk along the cliffs to the north of the campsite which we enjoyed and our 5 year old just loved splashing about in the waves and running around on the beach. I couldn't get over the night sky either. I've never seen so many stars. The big but is that the drive along the grit track really does take 1.5hrs. At the time, my husband was ready to kill me for my choice of campsite, but once we'd got there and he'd had a sleep, he loved it. It was indisputably our favourite place to stay of our whole trip.
