Once you are free of any initial crowds this has to rank as one of the best treks we've done.
Simply stunning! Challenging but not too challenging with an option to climb extra peaks for the serious trampers -e.g. Mt Ngauruhoe. Just do it if you're + weather looks good!

A bit run down but in the process of being done up as under new ownership.
Thermal stream goes a long way to compensate - will be great when revamped. Ladies loos were being painted so had to share with mens + no hot water in kitchen when we were there. Quite used to it all the same.

Hired a spade from the campsite and dug ourselves a hot pool by torchlight at low tide on the beach.
Great fun even if the pools keep filling up with sand. Went again in the daytime but very crowded - would recommend a night time trip!

Hired a 1958 VW Combi for a week of gentle exploring at the top of the north island, called Minty.
Really well equipped, for a van of that size and esp. age! Fun to drive and fabulous fun to be had pretending it's yours as passers by smile and wave! Worth every penny.

A fun couple of hours visiting remains of the set of Hobbiton from The Lord of the Rings films.
Shame much of it has been destroyed or original things couldn't remain, but that only detracts a little from great tour and isn't the fault of the tour company! And you can bottle feed a lamb afterwards!

Hired a Queenie so we could stand up + cook which in spring seems like a good idea.
Easy to drive + manoeuvre. Bed could be easier to construct. Could do with a few more utensils i.e. only 2 knives, forks etc.
Kia ora Tim,
Thanks for your review. Choice info. Give us a buzz and let us know what we should do to make the bed easier to fold out and we'll look into it. We'll see if our ops crew can do something about the cuttlery too.

Great (and inexpensive) way to explore 90 mile beach and Cape Reinga.
Amusing commentary from the driver. Pleased we didn't try driving on beach ourselves. Sand tobogganing was fun, if a little bit brief. Views at and around Cape Reinga are stunning.

If you're remotely interested in volcanoes this is a well managed and guided tour to a fascinating world!!
Guides extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Get scarily close to volcanic activity. Think we were lucky with a relatively smooth crossing.

This DOC campsite is basic, as expected but in a beach location behind the dunes of a golden beach.
Saw dolphins from the beach! Cold showers are refreshing but time saving!

Unplanned Visit: As our schedule went wrong but in a superb location, good facilities and lots of quirky things to see on site.
Can imagine children having fun there.
