Avoid here if possible.
This campsite has all expected facilities that were of an okay standard. You pay $1 for a 5 minute shower which wasn't great. One of the toilet/shower blocks was fine but one was awful, looked really dirty and run down. There is a small portion of the site that looks nice, we were told we weren't allowed to stay there because other people were expecting to come back to the spots. They put us in the most run down, dirty, cramped part of the camp, people obviously live there permanently and don't take any pride in the place. The kitchen constantly had flies in it and was generally uninviting. The lady who runs the place was miserable. There just really isn't a nice atmosphere here like some of the places we have stayed.

This place is everything you could ask for of a freedom camping spot.
Every spot (there are approx 12) has its own drinking water tap and bench! Beautiful views of the river. Lovely and generous camp manager who will offer you veg from his patch - say yes! There is also a toilet, a luxury for freedom campers. If you are in the area, stay at this camp, it's a really great experience. Don't be put off by limited spaces, we had no problem getting a spot.

NOTE: You no longer have to pay for showers!
There is just a timer on them, you get six minutes.
Lovely place, good facilities, really nice decking to eat outside overlooking the sea. Non powered sites with a great view of the ocean. Kind and polite camp manager. Top campsite.

Our favourite campsite from our entire trip around South Island.
Fantastic location with easily accessible walks around the lake. Also the best bathrooms we came across by a mile, they even had hairdryers!

We were very surprised when we arrived here after seeing so many good reviews.
It looked incredibly run down, not a particularly scenic area either. Outside kitchen with old furniture in it. All in all not a nice place. Maybe if you are a bit of a hippy it could be appreciated.
Hello Amy,
I too am surprised that you gave us a 3/10 rating. We state clearly we are a back to basics camp. 'If you enjoy native bush, birds, views and want to see some nature we are a perfect place to stay. If you are wanting a holiday park chain you may like to stay somewhere else.If you come here for the great outdoors over quality facilities we hope you'll rank us favourably.'
We have plenty of great comments about our camp being the best people have stayed at. It is more the surrounding bush than the facilities. Did you go and explore the bush walks, check out the views from the hills and wander through ancient forest we have? We don't force people to stay and it is not for everyone. We are not a Top Ten and strive to reuse and recycle material for the camp. Better luck next time with your choice of places to stay. Sorry to disappoint you but there is no need to give us 3 when it clearly states what we offer. Kind regards Marcus

Great atmosphere, a real sense of community here.
Really nice views. Camp manager was very kind. Well equipped kitchen, good and clean bathrooms although there were only 2 showers available (the only reason it's not a 10). Facilities to do laundry as well!
