Of course this is just a carpark, but what a nice one!
Windy place, but very close to the lighthouse. There are toilets. If you don't want to be a prisoner in your van try to park close to a car. People will leave after their walk and you won't have another van too close. Or just put your table and chairs. Lot of ppl here for days, with big campervans or caravans (fishers). I was really surprised, people were quiet, the night was nice.
A nice place to stay, for free. Thanks for letting people sleep here!

Perfect location if you want to do the Tongariro crossing.
We asked for one night, and the man replied that we must stay 2 nights, because lot of people want to sleep here during the weekend. We had nowhere else to go so we paid for 2 nights. I don't even know if this is legal.
A bit noisy, because the road is very close (powered sites).
You can take the shuttle in the campground ($35) and this is really interesting because your car stay here.
The first night was noisy, the second a nightmare because people came late, and the kids used the playground close to our car shouting for hours, till late.
Some people come here to fish, they stay in the cabins for a week or more, and they feel and do like at home, they use to talk and laugh late in front of the kitchen. Of course we slept right here...

Big campground, very cheap.
The facilities are old. There are holes in the bathroom walls, and on the ground into the showers too, but the water is hot, and showers are free so I didn't care.
The kitchen is old, and some of the cooking places don't work. One more time, the campground is nice, a good place to sleep, quiet, with a nice view. The problem is how some people are using the kitchen and bathroom. Some people use their cars to go to the kitchen (walking is too hard?) and let the car in front of the door.
If you want to wash your clothes come before 7pm because you need to buy tokens (it doesn't work with coins). Old laundry, but it's ok to wash. BE CAREFUL with the dryers! They NEVER stop, like the other dryers I used did. I chose "delicate" and I could even put my hands into the dryer after opening the door, my clothes were too warm, some of them are damaged. So if you use them stay in the laundry and open the door to look at your clothes.

$53 for a powered site (2 people and wifi).
It's expensive, very expensive.
Of course this is the only place to sleep, so people have to pay.
There is a gate with a code, but the gate is opened. There is a code to open the kitchen and the bathroom too. In the evening a car came, and parked on someone else place. When rhe the poor girl came back she couldn't use her place! They moved the car and went to another place. These ppl walked around the campervans looking for everything, and they tried to use the bathroom. Of course they waited for someone to go out because they haven't the code. They tried to use the kitchen too, but a man came and ask them to leave the place. During the evening lot of other campervans came, the place became very noisy. Ppl pay, so they do what they want, they don't respect the others. If the staff give you a place very close to the kitchen door don't accept. You won't sleep because of the noise of the door.
Showers are free, but you need to hurry. If you need more water you must go out to click one more time, and wait 3 minutes before getting water. 53 dollars... Only a few showers, only a little kitchen, very noisy tourists who won't respect you. .. When I was cooking in the kitchen a woman took my pan to cook, and another one used my hand towel!
If you can sleep somewhere else skip this place!

Very little carpark, with clean toilets.
The weather was bad, we spent the night there. Unfortunately very noisy guys came and ruined a part of our night, but this is not the fault of the place.

Interesting place because it's very close to the Wai O Tapu thermal wonderland.
The free thermal pool are a good place to have a break at the end of the day.
But sleeping here was hard. The campground is little, and we couldn't even open the doors of our campervan. Some other cars came and parked too close. And of course they spent hours opening and closing their doors. The campground is not cheap, a bit more space would be appreciated

One of my best night in NZ!
The owner is very friendly, and has a great sense of humor (above all with french tourist!).
The campground is very little, close to the road, but we had enough place, and a table.
The kitchen is great, the showers are free. 2 lovely pigs come near the fence to salute you, they have horses, goats, and even a deer.
Very close to the glowworms caves (the expensive ones, and the wonderful free bushwalk).
I recommend this place to all!

Lot of people are sleeping here, so you will spend some time hearing your neighbors opening and closing their 100 doors (how many doors are there on a car?), but this is not the fault of the place.
Very friendly seabirds trying to steal your food, this is funny.
Clean toilets. No water.
A nice place, not far from the lighthouse and the seal colony.
Thanks for letting people sleeping here for free!

Ok, this is the most expensive place we found during our holidays, but we don't regret!
$50 for a powered site, like in some other campgrounds, but the wifi is really expensive ($6, but quite unlimited ). Of course you can sleep here without using internet.
A quiet place. There are only a few sandflies and it looked like paradise after some nights in hell because of these b*****.
Nice staff, little shop.
Very nice kitchen, very clean.
About the bathroom : I never seen that anymore. The bathroom is more clean than a never used one! Fresh flowers, unlimited showers, perfect!
Some nice walks here, to a lovely waterfall (and some longer walks too) into an incredible bush, very wet, with beautiful light, native birds.
Into the campground you can see glow worms at night, and if you walk to the creek with a red lamp at night you will see a wall of glow worms.
I recommend this place to all! In the middle of nowhere but it worth the stay

I had read the reviews of other campsites, and was ready to spend a bad night for an exorbitant price so I chose the closest to the ferry.
It was even worse than I expected. We arrived early (2pm). Huge reception, very professional staff. I asked for a quiet place at night and we were placed next to the playground. I hoped it will calm down. Behind the fence, golfers watched the campers. They all do it, we felt like zoo animals. A train stops nearby, behind the other fence there is the station of the industrial area ... Genial. Further on, the sports fields, kids were playing football. A man arrives to mow our site and all around while we eat outside. He has a helmet, not us. The noise is indescribable. After 20 minutes we run to the kitchen. Empty kitchen but I understand that they are tired of being robbed. Outside a man discusses with the one with the lawnmower. The engine of his car turns, and for an hour they will talk, it smells diesel, they do not care. In the evening, golfers continue to watch us over the fence. To go to the shower we cross the area where the motorhomes are draining while we walk in the dirty water. The night arrives. The kids are still screaming, they're screaming past our car, the parents do not care. Here we pay so I do what I want, no matter if you want to sleep...The campsite fills up, the doors slam until midnight, with all the lights of the campervans we put a mask on the eyes. In the morning the sirens of the industrial area awake those who sleep and at 7 o'clock the kids are already screaming on the playground. To complete the picture it lacks planes (ah, here's one!) And maybe a treatment plant (maybe I didn't looked enough ). We leaved this place hoping again that it was a joke, the hidden camera was really hidden.
Thanks for your review, It does surprise me that you were surprised that a family holiday park had children enjoying themselves. From this review it seems to me that you had your mind set prior to staying with us and maybe a holiday park is not the correct environment for you.

I have hesitated before writing a review...
This place is just PERFECT if you love wild and quiet places.
Toilets, a shelter to cook and eat.
Birds everywhere, nice little walk through an incredible redwood forest. This is the beginning of some very long walks too.
No road sign on the main road. Just turn on the Kiriwhakapapa road (gravel, but ok). Rabbits on the road, be careful.
I wrote that I have hesitated before writing a review because this place is a forgotten paradise, and if tons of campervans go there it won't be a paradise anymore :)

Accept this place for what it is : an overnight place, when you are tired after walking all day, or when you want to get up early and begin to walk early.
Or else go elsewhere, there are free campsites lower (sometimes noisy too!)
Very little place. Lots of campervans, so be prepared to hear the delicate sound of cars doors opening and closing for hours if you are unlucky. People can park here late, you will need ear plugs. And a mask because of the lights near the station.
I wonder how many people really paid, like in the others places managed by the DOC.
Trains are noisy, trucks are more noisy, but ppl are worse:). Some friendly keas around, you can hear them.
You can cook in the shelter if the others let you a place to cook. Too many people sleep in the shelter (forbidden), some of them looked drunk.
