GORGEOUS!
So lovely we stayed longer than planned. It does get 'busier' even in October, if you show up by 2pm you should find a great spot a stones throw from the beach. The hike from Tapotupotu to Cape Reigna is stunning, we did it in 1:40 there (2 aggressive uphills), and 1:30 back. We're in shape and come from high altitude. ;) DOC sites are well managed, basic facilities (drop toilets, cold open air showers).

Great clean facilities, seemed expensive to have to pay $4 for laundry on top of the campervan fee.
Large communal lodge with big fireplace, many campers of all age ranges in October. Giving an 8 for lack of a view. Beach is a walk and/or short drive away.

Beautiful countryside view - though you miss out on the ocean view just around the corner.
Warmly welcomed by Louise, who ensured we enjoyed our stay. Facilities a bit dated for the price you pay. Cute caravan set up, though we came in a campervan and shared the site with just one other family for one night in October. Many friendly sheep. :)
Thanks Kelsy for that. We are in the middle of up dating, repainting the facilities etc.
