We did the full 5 day tramp.
We had reservations because of the cost, but you get what you pay for. It was a great experience. 4 excellent guides, nothing too much trouble, a very efficient operation. The size of the group was also a concern before we went (maximum 50 per group), but there is plenty of room on the track and we didn't feel as if we were hemmed in by people and we enjoyed the company in the evenings. The lodges and food were good - hot showers and drying rooms for clothes were very welcome. Be prepared for the worst weather. We didn't get the views from the top of the pass. If in doubt do it, you won't regret it. With the known dramatic and sudden weather changes some flexibility would help. For instance, being able to go straight onto the Milford Sound boat trip in the afternoon of the 4th day if the weather is good (we had great weather that day). By the next day the weather could have changed considerably, which it had for us and we had a cold, wet and misty boat ride.

A 7 week trip in our lovely base jumper camper van in October/ November.
Picked up in Auckland and dropped off in Christchurch. Very impressed with Wilderness. The pre trip information, dealing with our queries, excellent handover. We did have problem with the ferry booking and the electrics, but those were dealt with quickly and efficiently. All the staff were excellent and couldn't have been more helpful. Loved the van. Really comfortable, well equipped and an excellent design. So good not to have writing scrawled all over the outside. Have recommended the company to friends who are booked to go on 8th January (lucky people!)
