A little bit too crowded but a lovely area though.
Spent a week there walking through the Hunua Ranges right after Christmas and had an awesome hunting experience with the rangers too.

Stayed at a couple of DOC sites ($10 per person), and did some walks through the valley.
Highlights were a non guided tour of glowworms. The river was flooded so a little wet at times.

Awesome experience, has its own atmosphere, even for people who are not a fan of the films.
Too many tourists and way too expensive, but still worth it.

Nice little walking track (easily accessible, about 2 to 3 hours) with heaps of Kiwi and tourists on it.
Beautiful spring, but just way too crowded.

Arapuni Landing

Not well known to tourists, it is quite a good experience to have nearly only Kiwis around you.
Boogie boarded with some friends on the really calm lake. Dams around it are impressive!
