How amazing is it that this walkway is essentially Whakatane's backyard?
It is impressive how in about six hours, you can walk through forest life, Otarawaierere Bay, Mokoroa Gorge, historic reserves with Maori significance and be gifted with views of the beach and forest from the tops of the hills and ridges.

This is a good informative and enjoyable tour if you want to gain some insight about Maori traditions and customs from local Maori guides.
Do not miss the cultural performance that happens twice a day, and be sure to take your time exploring the village.

You can feel how extraordinary this sacred place is as soon as you are at the entrance of Cape Reinga.
For a quick 45 minute walk to Te Werahi beach, it has to be my favourite short walk that allows you to have epic views - and the best part, seeing between 7 to 10 sperm whales playing where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean meet! Cape Reinga is a magical place!

Being in a wagon pulled by a tractor was pretty fun....
especially the fact that we were being driven through Cape Kidnappers and got to the Gannets Colony Reserve! Our guide was also knowledgeable not only about the gannets but also the rock formations and natural life around us. It was really enjoyable and for four hours, you totally got your moneys worth. Just make sure to bring lots of water, sunblock and food!

Being from the Pacific North West in the US, I have been fortunate to be near mountains and incredible hikes in the area.
I love hiking and I have to say that the Tongariro Alpine Crossing has been the best hike I have done so far in my life. Sure, it is crowded but for good reason. Stunning views and I love that people of all ages do the hike. It is a great place to meet other travellers as you hike through the scenic beauty of Mt Tongariro.

For the price you pay and the amount of time for the tour, it feels a bit sparse.
But it was still a really cool experience to be in a boat going through a small river and seeing the glowworms above you. If you don't have the money to experience the glowworms in Waitomo, don't worry, because there are other awesome options to do..... like Abbey Caves which is free!
