We are giving this place 10/10 because we felt we'd stepped back in time to the days when things were more laid back.
Where else could you get your very own private lockable spa room accessible all through the night plus a huge thermal spa pool, plus kitchen and showers with hot water that never runs out, all for $38?! We loved this place, our powered van site was as quiet as, we could only hear the cows mooing. The guy at reception said he was only the gardener and after booking us in told us to find any spot we liked, no worries. A short walk away over the road there's a free thermal walkway, "Where fire meets water", meandering through natural plopping mud and great hot springs. This campsite is an Oasis indeed!

This is a really good place to start the trip, close enough to Auckland to get to after picking up the van.
Lush green lawns, the park is a bit old fashioned but there's real charm in that: everything was perfectly good, showers and loos, kitchen and campsite. We loved the friendly resident black cat, she was much friendlier than the grumpy owner/manger who obviously doesn't enjoy his job in this little slice of heaven. A great spot to start the trip, just don't expect any help from the owner if you arrive after dusk.
We purchased Dickson Holiday Park 29 April 2016, from the grumpy owner, and we are both friendly, helpful people. Neil and Cindy

This place is large, it's really well set up and is a family oriented place, lots of kids riding bikes around and playing on the big tree but it's perfectly located and has everything you'd need.
Friendly, helpful staff in reception. It has a pizza and burger place on site in a pop up shipping container. Easy access to the wonderful swimming beach and walk to Cathedral Cove. Showers, kitchen, laundry are fantastic. Our powered site was leafy and green and spacious even though we were there at Easter. Fantastic place.

The site we had was perfect, under a large spreading elm tree - just magical.
Green grass, short walk to showers, kitchen and laundry which were all perfect, clean and well maintained. We were again impressed by how NZ campsites care about recycling cans, bottles, and paper. Lots of takeaway places only a short walk away and we did the walk which was shown on the Cambridge Street Guide we picked up at reception; this walk is well worth doing as it takes you through the Leamington Walkway near waterways and through rural fields as well as through the town. Great campsite even though wifi wasn't free. Lovely place to park your van, quiet and plenty of outdoor wooden tables.

Good, clean, well managed spot.
We wanted to swap our campervan site as some noisy campers drew up beside us and opened their side door right opposite ours, staff were helpful in allowing us to shift to another site with bit more privacy, I suggest asking first if you can have a site nearest the fence rather than between the road and the pool. The three pools were lovely, two hot thermals and a larger cool swimming pool. Really close to the town's park with natural thermal pools including a lovely foot spa. Showers and kitchen perfect.
Thanks for the review Catherine, Your absolutely right if you want a site you are more than welcome to come and have a look around and we are happy to pick any that are available.
Thanks for taking the time to make the review :)

We didn't actually see the hot spas but we paid $50 for a powered site which was divided from other sites by hedges, that gave a bit more privacy than at other sites.
The amenities were top notch, clean and good showers. We didn't want to unhook the van to go back into town so staff called a taxi for us to go back into Taupo, the site is a bit of a way out of town but we managed to walk back after dinner. A word of warning, the entrance shares driveway with the Sheraton Hilton so we drove past it at first thinking "this can't be our camping ground" but the posh gates are for the resort, all was revealed up the driveway, really nice spot.
