Basically an open field next to a road.
Convenient location if you need to spend a night somewhere (and you want showers, kitchen, etc rather a basic DOC campsite) en route to the Routburn Track or other local walks. The facilities are OK - a little small if the place is crowded. Some simple stuff - bathroom floors always dirty and the waste bins aren't big enough for a day's worth of paper towels - could easily be improved. The guy running the place is a bit snobby and sadly not very helpful about the weather, local hiking tracks or anything else.

Fairly nice campsite, especially when it's not too busy, on the edge of an estuary (great kayaking).
Good facilities. Only downside during my stay was the excessive perfume/insecticide which was automatically spraying constantly in the men's bathroom (and presumably also the women's); the place reeked of the stuff and it clung to clothes for days.

Really nice lakeside campsite with nice views.
A little out of town, perhaps a disadvantage if you don't have wheels but otherwise an advantage. Pretty big tent/camper sites (some bigger than others, so look around before selecting one) - far bigger than at many other campgrounds. Nice, helpful people running the place. Super clean (I saw the staff down on hands and knees scrubbing the kitchen floor one morning). Highly recommended.
