This was the last campsite we stayed on after 50+ nights camping in NZ and we liked it so much we ended up staying for three nights.
The location is great as it's right next to the beach, but it's sheltered from the worst of the ocean winds. Sunrise was worth getting up to watch. There was a nice covered eating area next to the kitchen. $38 per night for two people on an unpowered site in March 2016. Hot showers were 50 cents for 5 minutes.
It sounds like you had a great trip to New Zealand and i'm so glad we we're able to help you finish on a high note! It really is a stunning sunrise from the beach here so it's great to hear it was a good morning for it when you were here.

A little confused about where to sign up - basically you go to the main campsite and they direct you to where you can camp, they have a few sites along here.
We stayed at this one as had to be up early for whale watching and it was closest to town. Awesome spot, toilet was in a little tin shed and I was impressed, cleanest we have had and flushable. You can use showers etc at Goose Campground as well if you want. The road noise didn't bother us. It might if you have a tent but the views far outweighed any noise. We had seals literally metres away from us! Pretty cool and the moonlit sea and sunrise were amazing too!!! Don't stay in town stay here, cheaper and waaayyy better.

Wow best site so far and only 17 dollars for 2 of us and the van!
So lovely and pointed us to a great walk in the morning. Hot showers, clean facilities. Campground was immaculate! Had a view over the Gorge, a tad windy in the evening but that didn't bother us for the view far outweighed the wind!

Despite the strange look about this site it was a perfect cheaper alternative to the ones in town.
This is the first of the 2 campsites. There are permanent caravans there likely used by the local fisherman. We pulled up and there was one other couple staying just outside the fence, but by 6pm there were at least 15 campers who had arrived. A lovely man collects money, he is in one of these caravans so just head down to him and have a chat. He provided maps and local knowledge. You can swim in the lake too. Toilets were standard, perhaps a bit stinky, but as expected! Great overnight spot close to peninsula walk!

Nice hot showers, very clean facilities.
Kitchen available but we did not need to use. 15 minute easy walk into the centre so great if you are planning a few drinks as we did. Sites themselves were nothing special but did the job. Had a hostel vibe to it. 50 dollars for a powered site and WiFi code given to you.

Awesome DOC site, best one yet.
Doesn't look like much on arrival but try and get a spot down by the lake. It helped that we had great weather but we all (other campers) sat by the lake in the evening and watched the sunset with a beer and then again take a look in the morning and enjoy a stroll for the views. Toilets were long drop and no tap for water available but you can get it from the lake. Plenty of spaces and shelter if you're in a tent. I would suggest doing this one after Milford Sound so you don't miss the morning views.

Stayed here ready for an early start to Milford.
Large area, plenty of room if you arrive late. Tents were set up in the forest for extra shelter. Toilets were long drop and some rather stinky, as expected really. Could not find any water taps or sinks so make sure you have washing up water with you.

Got here around 5pm after a long hike up to Josef, plenty of spots in the MacDonald side.
Long drop here but 2 minutes walk to the nicer toilets on the Otto ground. Looked pretty busy that side but a better view and nicer toilets. Popular campsite and we enjoyed our stay. Wardens came and collected money around 8pm.

Price was a bit steep for us travellers but the facilities were great, lovely, clean kitchen area, hot showers, clean toilets, grass was well maintained and plenty of space.
Nice little town of Reefton at your finger tips if you need to stock up on anything at the local store. River runs behind so stock up on the mossie spray. Great nights sleep here :)
