We stayed overnight before catching the ferry.
It is the best site of our visit. The washrooms are impeccable and even have piped background music! It is an easy walk to the town centre and it's very convenient for the ferry.

Freedom camping can't get better than this.
The site is along a track running parallel to the shoreline. There are numerous grass parking areas between the track and the beach so wherever you choose you have the sea on one side and a spectacular mountain landscape the other side. There is no passing traffic apart from the occasional train, but trains are infrequent and not too intrusive. It's a good stopover from which to visit Kaikoura, which is a lovely town. We can recommend the whale watching helicopter.
