If you are self contained, this spot it just lovely.
A small car park overlooking the Pacific, south of Timaru. Clean and quiet, potentially windy. No facilities at all, but a short drive to full facilities at the freedom camping spot east of Catherine's Bay.

Nice flat site, with all facilities.
It was really cold the night we stayed, but we still used the playground the next morning. A but more pricey than we expected, but it was our first place we had paid at, so learnt then that prices are per person. No views, but interesting part of NZ to be in.

We arrived after being in Christchurch for the previous day.
This is off the beaten track, but easy to find using the app. A very flat area, with good toilets which are cleaned once a day in the morning. Right next to a beautiful river running through a wetland reserve that is worth driving through, and next day we went to see Lake Ellesmere. It gets busy with vans and sleep in cars.
