A beautiful and tranquil small camping area surrounded by native forest.
The area is lush and green with fantails swooping about and tui singing in the trees. 1.5km from SH1 and in a deep valley so no traffic noise. There were approx 15 vans and a few tents camped there I night I was there. Everyone was nicely spread out around the perimeter of the clearing so you didn't feel crowded out at all. The facilities are minimal but adequate - 3 unisex toilets and a wash basin. However, despite only being $8 for this beautiful campsite I didn't see any of the other campers register and pay the $8 fee.
I will certainly return to this beautiful spot.

Beautiful place to camp right by the ocean.
Wonderful sunrises. Close to railway but didn't hear trains during the night.

A good quiet location beside the estuary.
Awesome sunrises. Holds lots of vans and tents but usually gets full quickly during the early evening. Toilets - get cleaned everyday. Two cold showers - one open shower beside the toilets and another shower with more privacy amongst the flax bushes down the far end past the barrier gate. The camp ground is just a car-park but there are plenty of flat grassy areas for tents, nice plantings of flax, toitoi, and native trees. A happy place to stay for free.
