Good location right by the river.
But the negative point is that it is close to railways and trains pass every hour.
Hopefully last train at 9:30 pm.
Not so many choices for free camping in this zone.
North Island ▷ Ruapehu ▷ Tongariro / National Park Village ▷
3.0/5
Close to Tongariro start up point.
Very quick transfer with their own shuttles.
Campsite ok but only one sink in the kitchen. Not so convenient for the whole campground.
Water flow on shower could be erratic.
No dump station.

Very good location.
Quiet and amazing view on lake and Tongariro mountains.
Ideal for sunset sight.

The location is very good.
Just on the beach. But quite expensive ($27 for 2 adults and one kid and $2 for rubbish).
No facilities (kitchen or sinks to wash). Only cold shower and dry toilets.

Sleep with Kiwis in the bush.

The spot not to miss during your trip in NZ.
After hiking on the cape, it's the perfect bay to relax on the beach and sleep.
Well managed by DOC.

3.5/5
Very good location for hiking to Cathedral Cove.
Be lucky to find a site, only 5 or 6 sites.
A little bit impersonal because it is on the carpark.
Toilets smell bad even if they are cleaned daily.
North Island ▷ Bay of Plenty ▷ Te Puke ▷
4.0/5
Simple car park with flush toilets.
Right on the beach.
Much better than staying in normal campsite stuck like sardines.
We were lucky and saw 2 orcas just off the shore during our breakfast.

Wouah!!!
You think you could be at the end of the world.
Only the sea, Mount Egmont, and a lighthouse and some others campervans.
The only drawback: very noisy. Due to high tides, very windy weather and stone beach. At high tide it was almost impossible to sleep.
This location is famous for photographs. Many of them come to capture the sunset with the lighthouse and the mountain at the back.

We saw many orcas during this trip.
We went to a second bay where one dolphin was there and wasn't afraid of people.
20 people at a time in the water to be with this dolphin. It wasn't what I expected.
The crew refused to give us neoprene swimsuits even though water was fresh (less than 20C) for us. We live in Thailand.

The campsite we preferred during our South Island trip in December 2013.
So peaceful, a site in the middle of such terrific views.
Along the rough road you wouldn't expect to have such beautiful campsites once arrived.
