Very pleasant place to camp.
Very calm and cozy, lots of space under the trees, right next to the river. In the morning, a short walk to the beach is invigorating.

Unpleasant place to stay in the middle of nowhere, just beside the road and a bit far from Franz Josef.
Gravel yard surrounded by construction materials, no views whatsoever. Still, it was the only option to stay for free around the area.

Little carpark, nothing special but okay to spend the night.
Only 1 km away from the Pancake Rocks. A great track (Pororari River Canyon Track) starts right at the campsite.

Beautiful spot, easy to find, great views over the Golden Bay.
Surprised in the morning by a black swan armada in the sea!!

Nothing special, but a convenient place to stay when planning day trips to Abel Tasman.
Really recommend the sea kayak experience (available to rent on the campsite).

Really nice place to stay overnight.
Very spacious (therefore good privacy) and cozy, lovely views over the lake and its super cute ducks. What a zen morning!

Beautiful location on Elaine Bay.
Little but nice DOC campsite, somewhat exposed to winds, but still worth it. Great views!

Great spot to camp!
One of the best places we stayed in the whole South Island. A little exposed to the wind, but still worth it. Gorgeous views over snowy mountains and the ocean. What a wonderful surprise when we woke up in the morning!

Great campground, with all the amenities needed.
We arrived late in the evening. I don't recommend driving the road all the way from Te Anau in the dark - you'll loose the views and it can get a bit risky. We didn't have bookings, yet the staff was really nice and welcoming (though we were there in October; bookings are strongly recommended in high season). We were visited by cute playful Kea during the night!

I do not recommend this campsite at all.
We stayed there in our last night before heading up to Chistchurch, but it was a bad choice. It is in fact very spacious and by the lake (dull views though). But we were almost eaten alive by sandflies. There were millions of them outside and also inside the campervan! They sounded like rain hitting the campervan. Besides that, it is very tricky to get there, particularly at night. Still, if someone wants to stay there, you need to go down the Lower Lake Road and take the first left; the last km is a gravel road.
