Camping spots are sparse around here, so it's better than nothing.
The road into here was pretty scary in a 6 berth campervan, narrow and steep. We arrived late at night, parked and were almost asleep when we were woken by a couple of 'hoons' (noisy idiots revving their car engines) driving back and forth, and given its isolation, felt too unsafe to stay here with two young children. Drove on for another 40 minutes or so to the much nicer, Tokaanu Tailrace.

A good free camp site for self contained campers.
We were here in winter (July), and yes, it is exposed and windy, so it's a bit cold if you have little children with you, but it has beautiful views and it's nice to see the lighthouse too. No facilities, but, not a problem for us in a self-contained camper. We had a lovely sunset as we cooked up dinner. Nice quiet, safe spot to stay overnight.

A beautiful spot right at the beach for self contained campers, with a fantastic park/obstacle course with climbing walls, and a very fun flying fox, just behind the car park, which we loved, as did our
pre-schooler. Public toilets and a tap nearby. Lovely quiet & safe spot when we were there, room for a few camper-vans.

A great safe stopover for us in a self contained campervan.
Awoke to a gorgeous view over the lake with swans, waterbirds and ducks to watch, much to the delight of our 3 year old. Beautiful surrounds, well maintained, rubbish bins emptied each day, even on a Sunday when we were there. Water, dump station and cold outdoor shower, and taps, provided everything we needed. No public toilets here, but again, not a problem for self contained campers. Highly recommend staying here!
