Great place for our first stop from Auckland.
Easy to find, reasonably quiet (little bit of traffic noise, but ok). Beautiful spot, lovely walk along the beach. Lots of space, there were lots of campers here but we still got a spot. Get here early if you want one further away from the road. Our first taste of free camping, and our first night in a motor home. Recommended. We even felt the big 7.1 earthquake around Hawke's Bay the night we stayed here.

Hot Water Beach

Amazing place to stand in hot water just metres from the beach!
Need to be there at low tide. Lots of people, but we still managed to walk through and stand in hot water. Some parts are scalding, you need to be careful, we had children with us. We didn't take a shovel, but there were many 'vacated' holes and we weren't in swimmers, just standing and walking around checking it all out. Very fascinating!

Cathedral Cove Walk

Beautiful spot, well worth the walk.
It's a reasonably challenging walk if you are not fit, but doable. We did it with 2 children and a bub strapped to my chest. Just take breaks along the way, and take water with you. Wasn't busy when we went, but it was overcast. Stunning scenery and the colour of the water is amazing! Highly recommended making this a stop on your trip! We managed to get parking for 2 motor homes near the walkway no worries. Early September.

Wilderness Motorhomes

We spent a month in a Wilderness Argos and found it great.
The staff were very helpful and followed up any queries we had on the road. The motor home handled very well and was easy to drive. It was a little challenging sometimes being crowded with 5 of us in there (2 adults, 2 kids and an infant ) but we managed ok. They supplied enough of everything (towels, linen, etc) & were happy to give us extra before we left. My only reason for dropping the rating a little was it could've been cleaner when we picked it up. The bathroom could've been cleaned more thoroughly and the fridge had a terrible smell on opening. But we let Wilderness know after dropping off, so they should address these minor issues. Overall, we were very happy. They also told us they were retiring the 5 berths, so we may not be able to use them again anyway, but I would check first.
