Very good spot to sleep one night if you want to stop before or after Christchurch.
The only problem is this is a little bit far away from the main road (14km). But a very quiet place with toilet. Near a river and a small village. Camping is free or you can give a donation

Simple spot really near to Picton (less than 7 km).
Just 12 areas to park your vehicle. It is noisy because it is near to the road but just for 1 night it is enough.

A free campsite in Akaroa itself.
A little bit hard to find in the dark. It is just at the marina when you arrive in town on your right. No toilets.

It was very cold during winter but a very beautiful area in the morning. Be careful it is snowy sometimes.

A free campsite "near" Christchurch (30km).
Noisy. Bad toilets. But grass to park the car without any problem.
