This was exactly what we want from a Holiday Park, it is small enough to be personal and quiet, yet clean and well looked after.
We stayed before we hiked the Kepler and came back here after, we liked it so much. It was our favorite Holiday Park after almost 8 weeks in NZ.
I am not sure how to describe a place as feeling genuine but that is the word that comes to mind.
All the facilities are well maintained, kitchen had plenty of dishes, utensils, pots and pans. Bathrooms are clean. Showers are hot and don't require coins. The Possum Lodge definitely is the best kept secret in the area!

It is just a field, a big field open to the wind and noise from anyone who pulls in next to you.
Furthermore, we stayed at free sites with better facilities. I would find a different site next time.

This was the most friendly and helpful reception we encountered in 8 weeks of travel.
All the facilities are well taken care of. Kayaks are free to use if you are staying and we found the kitchen to have everything we needed as well (one side note from a previous review, we also found the main oven to not work but there were lots of smaller convection ovens available). Our only real disappointment was that the facilities were all locked at 10pm sharp.

The campsites here are pretty remote.
The road is a little over 10k in total with the first camp at about 3k and the second at the end of the road. From there a series of trails lead through a beautiful forest. There is also a DOC hut with 12 bunks about halfway down the road. We were there in Autumn '15 and the road was pretty bad in spots with lots of potholes and ruts cut out by water runoff. I would not drive a campervan down this road in the condition it was in. If you have 4WD or a truck with clearance and decent tyres you should be fine and will likely have the place to yourself. We also attempted the area trails via River Road and found evidence of several busted windows in the bushes. It might be best to approach the area from the southern trailhead and campgrounds.
