A good stopping point for us between Northland and Coromandel.
The view over the Firth of Thames is stunning and the area was quiet and contemplative. What more can you ask for of a free site? Thanks to the boat club for making this available.

A beautiful, secluded beach spot at the top of Northland.
Would recommend spending more than one night here, as we only spent one and had no time to do the many walks from the area. Location is perfect, showers are very cold and outside, and there are many mosquitoes (turn off any lights before opening vehicle doors). We paid $6 per person unpowered.

What a wonderful location!
Camping under the stars surrounded by happy, if slightly bemused-looking, sheep. You can make a campfire if you have the skills (bring firelighters, as the wood was damp when we arrived). Access from the north is via a windy and narrow hilly route off the SH1, which seems to never end, but has great views. Access from the south is much simpler. 45 minutes' drive to the Wellington ferry. Facilities clean. We paid $6 per person unpowered. Make sure to do the Battle Hill loop walk to the top of the hill. Stunning views and a bit of history on the way. Love this place.

A delightful little spot with very friendly owners.
Just outside of Invercargill and handy for the Catlins. We paid $5 per person for an unpowered site. For that you can walk around the beautiful gardens and talk to the ducks. The café looked nice too but we didn't get to eat there - sadly it's not open for breakfast. One of the most memorable and understatedly lovely sites we stayed at.
