I highly recommend this trip to anyone that wants to explore the Waitomo caves and have both- learn about the caves and have enough time to take photos, look and admire AND get active and try one of the
many outdoor activities- caving, abseiling, rock climibing...
You'll get all this without any crowds but with your own personal, extremely friendly and funny guide who seems to know just anything about the caves and who'll tailor the trip to just exactly what you like.
This tour is one of the best things I've done and it's worth every penny. I'd do it again tomorrow!

Otorohanga Kiwi House and Native Bird Park

This is a fantastic bird park and the only place in New Zealand where you can see a Great Spotted Kiwi live!
They always have two Kiwis on display that you can see, there is a huge number of nicely made bird enclosures with most of NZ's native birds PLUS NZ tuatara and geckos! We had a very nice day in the park and I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to see NZ wildlife without going into the bush!

Kauri Coast Holiday Park Guided Kiwi Walk

I stayed at the lovely DOC campsite and went for a walk through the Reserve on my own.
Saw a Kiwi just a few meters away from me and then got very annoyed when the large guided Kauri Coast Holiday Park Guided Tour came, talking so loud that the Kiwi ran away. When I told them, that they had just scared away a Kiwi, I got the response "oh we already saw one".
Didn't get the feeling the people in the tour actually appreciated how RARE and SPECIAL it is to see a Kiwi in the wild!

We did the Rafting-only tour and were disappointed.
The guides were nice, but the rafting was a lot slower and less adventurous than we expected and we felt like a flock of sheep rushed through the caves. If you wanna enjoy Glow Worms and appreciate the caves at your own pace there are better tours than these big commercial ones!
