10km walk along a beautiful beach to a large gannet colony (return the same way - that is boring!).
Nice views from the cliffs. You get really close to the gannets (and their smell!).

Free DOC campsite, very basic, only a long drop toilet, no water!
Very quiet in the middle of nowhere. We were glad we were not alone there - we would be so scared!

$6 per person.
Enough space for tents, if you sleep in the car though you have to stay in the carpark. Crowded in summer (a lot of toilets, all of them smelly), beautiful setting, great swimming hole.

A really interactive experience, there is something for everyone - Maori Art, 20th century artifacts, a lot of interesting displays about earth, an earthquake simulator - a great museum!

Laid back spa with private hot pools and a public hot pool, a short drive from Turangi.
Great place to relax after the Tongariro Alpine Crossing!

Hot showers (free!), kitchen - everything you can expect for $28/2 persons.
Usually quiet, mostly permanent residents. Can get crowded over summer (the kitchen is quite small), good atmosphere though!

Great, informal lessons, even for total beginners (like us), at a very reasonable price, lessons take place on the beautiful Waimarama Beach.
