Unlike the previous reviewer we didn't have problems.
It was right near the drinkable water and dump station (locked- key from Isite office opposite). We tucked ourselves in behind the park building and we couldn't be seen from the road. Nice walk and stream nearby and of course the free pools are 5 mins walk away. The laundrette in town is one of the cleanest I have ever seen. Isite office is open long hours and staff are very helpful.

It was a hot day and we only fancied the 20 min loop walk but there was a charge for it and we walked away as why should we have to pay for walking through our own NZ bush!

Took a while to find- tucked around a corner on the right side of the boat ramp and only the 5 official spaces.
We got the 5th space and one other s/c stayed, but that was no problem. Can fish from the beach. We were there on a Sat and a group of about 8 cars came and parked in front of us to use the small beach for launching their jet skis for about 5 hours but no biggie.

Like a small camping ground, but free, has water in pats outside and inside the toilet block.
Public boat ramp is at edge of camping area. Interesting to watch the boats come and go. When we were there in mid-Dec 2014, there were about 25 vehicles parked up. Toilets open all night and has bright lights going outside them all night.

Was the most amazing weather when we visited, a magic place.
Two parking areas- one partially fenced that you come to first and then the big open beach/grassed area where the toilets are opposite, so suitable for non self-contained. There is a sign asking for a gold coin donation and I hope people do this for such a wonderful site. Cape Palliser is just 7km further east and well worth the drive. Picnic tables, rubbish bins.

Very secure site and quiet even though near a main highway.
On a very still night you would probably hear the large travelling trucks. Security guard makes sure you have a valid self-contained sign showing. We were able to split our visit to the Museum by looking for two hours before they closed at 4.30pm and then next day at 9am when they opened. The ticket is valid for one year. I'd recommend half a day at the museum if you are a NZ'r.

Car park to park at free.
In fact there are two carparks, each have boat ramps. We parked up in the one at the tailrace, the first one you come to. This is only for self-contained. Keep well clear of the boat ramp. Second area at the end by the wharf is the larger area. Once again keep clear of the boat ramp. I couldn't see where fresh water was. Over by the fence on the way to the wharf is a fresh water tap and a dump station. To the right of that I assumed it was a toilet facility in the building there. No signs to show anything. A lovely lake scenic view with black swans and ducks.

Nice and quiet.
We are self-contained but others using the site were not. Seems to be a 24 hr toilet open on right hand side of the rugby building. Suited us as was central to what we were doing. Early wake up as Council came and mowed rugby lawns and rubbish collection the next day, but no worries. Thanks to the Council for providing these free facilities. Much appreciated.

Very picturesque.
Swans and ducks on the water and rowing and dragon boat training going on while we were there. Park in second carpark beyond the rowing shed, as locals come and go at all daylight hours running, cycling and walking dogs. It will be quieter for you then.
