Excellent spot for a long weekend with the kids.
Playground was a hit and the domain and village are tranquil for strolling. The beach offers great exploring (or fishing if that's your thing) and the river is breathtaking and swimmable!! Only downside is that all the good sites are occupied by empty caravans and we were kept awake until 3:30am one night by quad bikes. Toilets very clean and fresh water taps available.

Excellent camping with toilet and a brilliant playground for the kids.
We reversed into our parking space and woke up to a spectacular sunrise over the water. A morning stroll rewarded us with dolphins. Definitely recommend for a stop over. Shelter and picnic tables available. Wished we had more time to explore the reserve!

Facilities were grotty with black mould everywhere.
We parked on our concrete pad but could not avoid walking through mud when stepping out of van. Showers are free but it is a trickle of water. No playground for children and signs warning that children must not play in trees etc. Not a family friendly atmosphere. General unfriendly feeling with more permanent residents rather holiday makers. Would not return.

Great walks, toilets are typical long drops and could do with a decent clean.
The cascade falls themselves are difficult to get to as it includes a climb over slippery rocks that myself and children were not confident to do (Dad ploughed on over though!)

Good basic camping with clean vault toilets and a friendly ranger.
Difficult if arriving at night to find a parking spot. We didn't do the walk and there is a lot of development happening in the region.

It's free, it's safe feeling and the area is quiet and cute.
It is a carpark so expect minimal! Toilets are there but a fair walk away hence the requirement to be self contained. As a stopover it is perfect! Security cameras operating that follow every move. Excellent playground near by for the children.

Brilliant site!
Our favourite so far! Excellent kitchen with power!!! Clean toilets and showers. Great walks and we saw kiwi, kauri snails and glow worms. Great place for kids to run and explore. Safe and quiet. Do not miss out on this experience!

Exceptionally clean toilet and a view not to be missed!
Difficult to find a level parking space but overall a safe and clean site.

Very basic and exposed sites with traditional long drops (filthy and not maintained!).
Worth it though for the swimming holes, waterfall and tranquility. It's FREE and although not overly picturesque (a lot of forestry) the kids had a blast. Fords to cross to get to site 2 or 3 and to access gorge itself.

Great spot with amazing river swimming.
Very gusty winds channel down and through campsite and we watched many peoples gazebos fly away! Water is rain collection and needs boiling before use. First campground with Tui in the trees above our site!!! Definitely returning!

Awesome place with most of the benefits of the more expensive campground back down the road.
Swimming was great but be aware of algae blooms in peak season as deathly to dogs. Facilities were average and not a lot to do in immediate area so prepare to make your own fun!

Amazing FREE site!
So many birds: wood pigeons swooping all day, tomtits and fantails following us around, bellbird song...As you drive through all the felled forestry don't get disheartened as eventually you will arrive at a beautiful native bush and yes the mission up Red Beech or Mt Grey tracks is worth every painstaking minute!! The river unfortunately was more of a stream with stagnant ponds so I would take water supplies and don't rely on swimming if staying long. Take a picnic to Lake Janet while there though...very cute! Kids loved biking around grounds and yay another dog friendly spot!! And did I mention FREE!!

One of our favourite so far...we snuggled in near the stream and it was great to sit back and relax while the kids played.
The terraced site made for great biking and I think half the families there were child free while the kids hooned up and down! VERY HARD GROUND so prepare to bend most of your tent pegs!! The water is from the toilet basin so I suggest taking your own if possible as hard to fill bigger containers and well, hygiene?? Great walks and just a really cool place to hang out!

We spent 10 days here over xmas break...we love it!
Camped in tent by stream, kids played and we relaxed! Beautiful beech forest and lots of birds...also LOTS OF SANDFLIES!!!! Go prepared! Great base to get to castle hill or cave stream. Definitely recommend!

Not as dog 'friendly'as implied.
We were put in the sunless part of part...no morning or evening sun...our dog was not allowed anywhere else on campground with us. Facilities were clean and some spots looked amazing. Being so close to beach I would have thought a night of listening to roaring ocean sounds was upon us but unfortunately we were just metres from train track and very busy highway instead! Good base for 1-3 nights??

Previous info is incorrect...$8 per site per night so well worth it.
DoGS ALLOwED under control, toilet block, running water very basic but clean, unkempt sites and tenting may be difficult on some sites, AWESOMESpot with great views on the walks
