Awesome campground right by the river, totally free of charge.
You can camp there for one full week per two week period. Beautiful site just a few minutes drive from the city centre.

A great fun way of visiting the wineries in the Hastings area.
The guy was super friendly , gave us a great little map as well as lots of tips. Very comfortable bikes. A bit pricey but worth it.

Great way to try the local food and stock up on some fresh vegetables before continuing on your journey.
Laid back atmosphere, friendly vendors.

We only hiked in the area for a couple of hours but it was absolutely beautiful.
Great walk through the forest, views of the lake on the way up and a nice rock outcrop where you can stop for lunch. Gorgeous area.

We had a blast going down the long trail together (two of us), in water.
Hilarious! You won't stop laughing the whole way down. Unfortunately the photos cost nearly as much as the ride.

Interesting and well set up but we found it a bit too pricey for a self-guided visit.
Bring a lunch as well as sunscreen, a hat and water as there is little shade.

The drive to get to the start of the track is reason enough in itself to go!
Beautiful scenery, animals, coastline. The short hike to the top gives you a stunning view from the eastern top of New Zealand. Stay at the campground nearby and hike up to see the sunrise!

The best museum I have visited - ever.
Interactive, informative without being overwhelming (in the way the exhibits are set up), nice lighting, great subjects. Wish I could go back and explore further. If you are in town for a while, consider doing a floor or two at a time. Very friendly, funny staff.

You need a GDC freedom camping permit to camp here.
There are sites in the centre of town by the public toilets, right on the beach. We went a little further down the road and found a beautiful freedom camping site in a very quiet area. Nothing beats falling asleep and waking to the waves right on the lovely beach to walk on. No toilets.

The friendliest i-Site staff I have met!
They gave us heaps of tips of what not to miss on the East Coast and answered all our questions in detail. Get a freedom camping permit from them and enjoy! The East Coast is amazing.
You are welcome back any time you like Meredith ! Thanks for the lovely review.

Friendly, helpful staff.
Lots of information available about the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and other activities in the region. Right next door to the library (free, unlimited WIFI) and the Superloo (toilets and showers).

Free campsite with toilets, a shelter where you can make a fire and a nice walking track right next to the campsite.
Really enjoyed camping here.
