One of the best camping ground I stayed in NZ.
Close to the road but very quiet. And really at the start of fantastic walks.
Facilities are modern, clean and tidy (huge kitchen, hot showers,...).
This is a DOC site and staff was very friendly and helpful. The price was $25 for 2 people, unpowered site.
We were there in August 2014, and the only ones in the site. But I can easily imagine it gets full during summer.

Was there on a very windy day.
It was a beautiful and very dramatic landscape. The black sand is amazing!
There are also some nice walks starting from here.

Close enough from the city center for a walk. Also reachable by bus.
