The most beautiful night sky we have encountered on the South-Island!
However just as beautiful during the day. Completely quiet in the night since the road is blocked off due to the Diana Falls slip, this campsite however is before the slip itself. $6 p.p. with flushing toilets (frozen during our winter stay)

Dat drive tho!
A 44km gravel drive thats just breathtaking. Through rainforest, past Whanganui inlet and along the coast accompanied by thousands of sheep! Really is paradise. However when you arrive, it is not so much. We weren't sure if we were at the right place and looked like there hadn't been anyone there for ages.. Toilets are gross and you're in an area that can possibly flood. Water supply is the river next to you but non fully self-contained can't really stay there for much longer than a day or two..
LOADS of sandflies, even in the winter.. Not nice.

We drove from Te Anau to Queenstown at the end of the day and arrived here at night.
We woke up to find that we were surrounded by amazing mountains and great views! $10 per person but with clean and long-drop vault toilets. Also loads of walks that start from the car-park. Water comes straight from Lake Dispute. The drive there might be rather icy during winter.

Fine spot when on your way north.
Covered by trees but rather windy. Not too special but worth the $6 p.p. Flushing toilets were definitely a bonus.

Fine campsite but nothing special.
Free so it was a good stop on our way back to Christchurch. Very noisy road and trains passing by only about 20 meters away. Vault toilet and walks we couldn't really be bothered with after almost 3 weeks of driving around. No water supply.

The way there is quite tricky since its a very narrow one-lane gravel road with sometimes BIG rocks.
Keep driving until you cannot go further. Free (in July 2014) as people kept stealing the fees from the box. You'll notice as there are no camping forms available. Very cold during winter, our water bottles froze from inside the car. Great and proper hikes available starting from the campsite. Definitely worth the visit!! Vault toilets and water tap from creeks.

Beautiful spot to stay the night.
5 dollar donation is optional. Fine toilets and very quiet during the winter.

We weren't sure if we were allowed to stay here for the night since we weren't fully self-contained.
Called the council and they confirmed that we were indeed allowed to stay (only for one night). We stayed next to the playground.

We went to Otto's corner because it was more sheltered.
Next to a beautiful mirror lake which results in awesome photos! We stayed for two nights to check out the glaciers, worth the $6 p.p.p.n flushable toilets, water straight from the not-too-clean lake, we'd suggest boiling first.

Great place right next to the lake.
The drive there was very windy but fine. Great (flushable) toilets with lights! (wow!) Nice and quiet in winter.

Beautiful spot on our way to Milford Sound.
Great if you just need a nights sleep with an awesome view over the lake and mountains, just amazing! $6 per person but definitely worth it, since you stay right in the middle of Fiordland National park and there are no free sites.

We weren't sure if we were allowed to stay here (since we weren't fully self-contained).
In the end we found out that we weren't.. It's a simple car park with an outlook on the rough sea. Great spot but sadly only for FULLY self-contained.

We stayed here for 2 nights to take our Jucy car back in Christchurch.
Good spot, only about 30 mins from the city. Next to a road so can be quite noisy. Big, clean "V.I.P (I'm not kidding, check the seat!)" vault toilet and water from the river (under the viaduct).

Half hour gravel drive with awesome views over the coast.
Tiny little campsite that allowed about 5 campervans but definitely one of our favourites. Very clean vault toilet and clearly signposted DOC. Water from the stream under the bridge. Friendly Fantails and DOC people.

Great little spot for an overnight camp.
With a toilet and a great view over a little creek and the mountains in the background. Near to Rakaia gorge (make sure you check that out as well!! )

Probably a great spot during summer but was a bit creepy in the winter when you arrive after dark.
Creek very noisy but beautiful night-sky. Flushable toilets $5<< p.p.p.n. Water tap available
