We had a wonderful night's stay at this fairly isolated freedom camping spot.
Incredible views of the mountains and perfect for starting a lake walk in the morning.

Basically a car park on the road but perfectly located and free!
Walking distance to Dunedin town centre. Park a little further down the hill otherwise you are on quite a big slope.

Pukekos and sea gulls as company.

Incredible that this camping spot is for free.
Some of the best views of Mt. Cook you are ever likely to see. Stay up for sunset and get up for sunrise. Once in a lifetime.

This is what freedom camping is all about.
Perfect, isolated spot right next to the sea. Sunrise and sunset are both worth sticking around for. We were there with 1 other van so really felt that we had found a unique spot.

Nicely located freedom camping spot being next to the Clive River.
Water is apparently not suitable for use but good spot none the less. Flush toilet at entrance.

Lovely freedom camping spot next to, what seem's like, a famous beach.
The place was packed with campers so I imagine you need to get there early in summertime. A 1-minute walk to the beach which is great for sunset.

Good campsite with clean facilities, but the main draw is obviously the thermal pools which are free for campers.
Pools are well-kept and great for post-sightseeing.

Scenic campsite right next to the Waikato River.
Facilities are basic but the river side setting makes up for it. Perfect freedom camping spot.

Fairly decent freedom camping spot next to some salt baths.
We arrived late and left early so didn't get to see the facilities. There were quite a few campers when we were there so I imagine it is even busier in summer.

This campsite is around a 15 minute drive from the ferry terminal and is a wonderful start to the South Island.
You can camp right next to the sounds and start your day with sunrise over the sounds. Facilities are basic (long drop), but there is lots of space.

Lovely little spot next in a car park for the Pororari River Track.
Very quiet when we were there but views of hills were great. There is a tavern over the road that does good beer and food but wifi is pretty expensive.

Decent Top10 campsite with good facilities and location near Franz Joseph.
Doesn't seem that there are any freedom camping spots near Franz so we had to stop at this campsite. Wifi not free but fairly cheap.

Lovely campsite right next to Lake Okareka.
Water is crystal clear and good for swimming in. Long drop toilet and shelter for eating. Quite a long gravel road to get there but worth the drive.

Decent campsite with good facilities.
Takes only 3 minutes to walk to the beach to catch sunrise / sunset. Wifi is free around the kitchen area but you have to make sure you have enough 50cents for the hot showers.

Great campsite with modern and clean facilities.
Hot showers a big plus. Free wifi is also available which is rare for a Top10 campsite. Cute campsite cat :)
