One of Northland's best attractions and best kept secrets!
Stunning location, friendly staff and excellent facilities for the price. there are powered and un-powered sites here, some right on the beach front. There is a visitors centre with varying classes and free wifi. The showers are clean and hot and the kitchen facilities are more than adequate. The main show piece is that the island is a santuary for Kiwi's. Hire a red bulb torch and walk the tracks after dark for your chance to spot a Kiwi. We were lucky enough to see two in one night! and no more than a few feet away! Will be back.

One of the friendliest campsites in NZ.
right on the edge of lake Taupo. Easily fitted our 6 berth van into the lake view site. Facilities are great and very clean. There is also wi-fi that reaches most of the camp if you need to stay connected. Also great coffee vendor near the marina. Can't wait to go back there.

Great little spot next to the town park.
Relatively easy to find (not far from the local tourist info centre). Benches just next to the spaces with a stream/river flowing past. Very peaceful at night and felt very safe. There are public toilets near by (very clean) but only open during daylight hours.

Can be tricky to find as you have to travel past the DOC sites near the Chateau.
Keep heading up the road and you will not be disappointed. When the road opens up and looks more like a motorway - on the left you'll see a tiny sign saying 'self-contained freedom camping is allowed'. The sunsets and sunrises are equally amazing as you are nestled between the mountains and volcano. There are absolutely no facilities there and the temperature does drop after dark, but nothing can detract from the breath taking scenery.
