Spotless facilities within walking distance of the town.
Busy site, which also accommodated a coach of (very well behaved) school children.
Our first night's powered pitch was near to the fish gutting station and was rather souless. We asked to move to a prettier site under a tree for our next 2 nights and this was accommodated without a quibble. Nice swimming pool and clean kitchen.
Just hate that you have to press a button for hot water in the showers.

We stayed here for our last 2 nights of our 6 weeks tour of NZ.
Obviously, the overnight stop for first night's too.
Large pitches and excellent facilities. Kitchen spotless and excellently well equipped with pots, pans, crockery etc.
Boxes provided for last night campers to leave unwanted items and food, which is greatly appreciated by other camp mates.
Lovely clean, large hot water pool. We looked at the public one next door and didn't feel the need to pay to go in there.

A large, rather souless park with some powered sites divided off by hedges.
The facilities are spotless, which you expect from a Top 10 site.
The hated "press the button for hot water" for the shower, which is made even more difficult by not being next to your shower, in some cases. Too few showers for the numbers of people waiting to use them.
A coach of school children arrived and they virtuall took over the kitchen. Good position for the famous beach but I would rather have stayed at Hahei Holiday Resort, next to that fabulous beach and walk to Cathedral Cover, than here.

My favourite Freedom camping site of those we staying in during our 6 weeks tour.
We arrived first (one only allowed) and, but the next morning had been joined by 2 others. We had taken photos to show we were first there, but the council obviously weren't too bothered on the Saturday we stayed.
What could be better, sitting there watching the pod of Orchas swimming between us and Kapiti Island or strolling along the beach, or eating the excellent fish and chips, freshly cooked, from the shop in Howell Road watching the sun go down - hmm, difficult choice.
Loses one point only because the footpath went past our back door, but the people were friendly :)

Stayed here, on a powered site, after getting off the ferry.
Ok for an overnight stop but wouldn't wish for longer. Too far from the town unless you want a good walk.
Facilities were clean.

We took other reviewers advice and arrived latish (around 6:00) and were lucky to get a pitch overlooking the sea.
Be warned! Like loads of other campervans, we parked side on to the beach. Just as we were getting ready for bed, about 10:30, there was a knock on the door. It was a jobsworth who, seeing we were the only one with a light still on, told us that we were parked incorrectly and should have reversed into the bay. As we were moving on next morning he "kindly" allowed us to stay as we were after giving us his lecture. Nobody else had been disturbed. So, if you want a great view, go to bed early !!!! lol.

2.0/5
Whangamata has got a beautiful beach but please, please, stay somewhere else other than this town.
Having looked at the reviews for this and the neighbouring Settlers Motor Camp, we chose this one as the heavens had opened, it was late, and we didn't fancy driving further. I wish we had.
Horrible, horrible, horrible - says it all.
The showers, toilets and kitchen were clean however and the power pitch was large. However, for some odd reason the camping pitches are at the back of the facilities which front onto the permanent holiday homes.

Stayed here for one night while wating for the ferry.
Small site, with pitches close together but clean free showers and toilets (without the dreaded push the button for hot water).
Close to the town.

Secluded powered sites and clean facilities.
Good choice for access to Mount Rhuape and walks roundabout.

Very basic facilities.
Showers and loos are in portacabins. Clean though and soap has been added.
Rather a souless site with few trees. Usual 10 ten park prices, which is expensive for what you get here.

Powered site for the night with site right next to the beach.
Great difficulty in finding the honesty box as it was at the far end of the opposite camping ground. Toilet, water and dump station is all we needed for a great nights stay.

Not the nicest of settings but the nearest campsite we could find to Wellington.
Good facilities and, like other top 10 sites, spotlessly clean.
Take the bus to Wellington as parking is a nightmare. On our second day to Wellington, we took the bus going in the opposite direction and caught the ferry. More expensive and time consuming, but worth it for the experience and views.

Beautiful views over the stunning lake and the place to come if you want to star gaze.
the first powered pitch we were offered was on a slope (see previous reviews) so we returned to reception and asked for another. Done willingly, but they were surprised to hear about the slope.
Clean facilities and free showers, but the oh so annoying press the button for hot water. on the showers.

Our first campsite in NZ and we loved it.
Clean and well equipped. We arrived late due to mix up with our van but had no problem locating our site
Bonus was the swimming pool and hot tub. Average price for Top 10 sites, which are little more than others, but the top notch facilities make it worthwhile.

Decent sized powered sites but difficulty in getting water as our hose was too short (and it's a reasonable length) to reach the awkwardly positioned tap.
Small swimming pool. Good showers, some in individual unisex wet rooms. Buttons to press though for hot water, which I hate, even though I never get to the end of the time. Handy for the town and the whale watching.
Right next to the railway so there is some occasional noise, but it's not a busy line.

Really friendly and helpful staff.
Location is great, being near the town and just round the corner from an excellent supermarket.
Clean and well equipped facitlities.
Due to its popularity the pitches are really small and you are cheek by jowl with your neighbouring camper and the cabins.

3.5/5
A busy campsite where all the powered sites were filled on a nightly basis.
Pitches are close together.
Spotless facilities, which you come to expect of a Top 10 site. We didn't use the swimming pool or thermal pools as we had just come from Waikite thermal springs campsite and these couldn't compete, but they looked OK.
Within walking distance of the town.
Thanks for the review, Your right we cannot really compete with the Waikite Thermal Hot springs that is a great place to have a swim I've been there a few time and it's great. Glad you had a great time in Rotorua :)

Lovely site which spans the road.
We elected to have a powered site on the part which overlooks the beach and has access to the beautiful. This has its own spotlessley clean facilites. Just a stroll over the road leads to the main camp with a good swimming pool and hot tub. It's fun watching/feeding their "pet" eels too.
Thanks for your fantastic feedback - it is appreciated by the whole team

My favourite site for the whole of our 6 weeks stay.
Facilities are old and very, very basic (no dump station). Small kitchen and only 2 showers in the ladies for the campsite and the thermal pools. But, hey, it cost $22 a head for a powered site which entitiled you to free access to the thermal pools, where they charge the public $15.
The pools can be used until 20.30 and from 6.00 the following morning and checkout isn't until 12:00. We used the pools afternoon and the following morning so it was a bargain.
The stream of boiling water running alongside the campsite is a novelty but means you have a bad hair day during the whole of your stay, lol.

With wonderful views, toilets which are open all night and free, what more could you ask for?
My second favourite freedom campsite during our 6 weeks tour.

Large campsite, which is split into two, one surrounding the toilets and next to the lake and one a few yards away, just off the main road.
First was full, so we stayed on the latter.
Stunning lake but, beware, you need insect repellent. We learned too late. 27 bites, my husband counted and boy, didn't I know about it.
DOC site, and they do come round and check, so make sure you pay.

We stayed here only because we had just had our windscreen chipped and need to get it fixed.
A large family site which is near the beach. Lousy internet reception and you had to pay for a 6 minute shower, in a run down cublicel.
I wouldn't chose to come here again.
