as we didn`t want to be dependent on the (expensive) bus service, we started our tour at the end of the "normal" crossing.
we departed at 7:30am from the carpark up to the ketetahi hut (about 2hrs.) completly alone and further on to the blue lake, emerald lake and red crater. finally went up to mt.tongariro, also alone. returned from the top back to the car. overall about 9hrs of easy walking with very, very impressing views and nature arround!

all fine, impressive scenery.
a bit to expensive. saw dolphins, pilot whales, sharks. felt like very small creatures on the volcano island.

used a 2 seater campervan with 280.000km for 3 weeks.
first car (4WD) had an awful smell, like a wet dog. had to return it after one day. got another dirty car, 2WD only. smelled little bit better. did a 2-hour-cleaning by ourself. got no refund on price differnce (2 - 4WD)! overall, most of the cars are very old. staff @ AKL so far ok and friendly. we won`t rent a wicked camper again.

interesting, but too expensive.
half price would be ok. look for some discount vouchers :-)
