Fantastic site.
For a few nights free camping in registered self-contained motorhome/caravan. Limited numbers so they tend to park very close. Great views, access the bay, boat ramp, public toilets with cold showers on the side. Quiet at night - well mostly. Very popular so matter of luck if you get a site there for overnight parking.

We stayed two wonderful nights in out family tent on the water-front.
Quiet all night - expect for the birds and fish jumping [fantastic]. We had a great time kayaking and walking the river trail., No trouble launching kayaks in the water by the ramp at the north end of the camp. We are experienced, so have wheels for the kayak because you never know how far you have to launch from the car, but if you don't you could always drive your kayak up to the ramp. Happy to have the Warden there, so rules are obeyed and there is no issues to deal with. Camping by permit although a few days you can stay without before you require this. Other guys with boats, but just for fishing etc, because there is a strict 5 knot speed limit. Little bit of water weed around the banks but a few areas you can swim near the boat ramp. Didn't see any free roaming dogs, except for some self contained pets that were well managed, self contained, and not an issue for anybody. Couldn't find any fault with this site. Remember to pack enough water for the duration of your stay.

Agree with the other reviews.
We recently camped at the eastern end, and the site looks spectacular, great for swimming, kayaking, boating, and connects to the mountain bike trail. Relaxing place to be, during the day, only!. At night it turns into a fools 'party spot' that carries on to about 3-4 am, every night. During that time: we heard a series of explosions (gas tanks that were being tossed into one of many open fires, fireworks, and gunfire); open fires and the smell from burning rubber and plastic; and non-stop verbal exchanges, fighting, shouting and screaming. We thought that perhaps this was just a one-off event, but occurred every night. These individuals have complete disrespect for any others including us. Unfortunate considering the spectacular nature of this spot. Don't take your family camping here, A total disgrace.

I've tried to make a booking via phone to Apollos office, but ended up on an answer phone.
The Apollo message said to leave a name and number and that I would get a reply. I did, but I never got a reply to that, ever. Yes it was the correct number.
Yes I tried again a week later, and got the European office, but the speaker would not say where he was speaking from, and didn't know much about New Zealand, but was very keen and ready to take my booking [money].
Not a commercially favorable experience.

Good camp ground for us [wife and bubs] and our small tent: clean site, good location between the beach and lagoon; still close to town and short walk to shops and the basics if needed; separate from
the residential area of town; great reception by staff and other campers. All we needed was a small cooker. Plenty of fresh water taps about, and good facilities.

Great location for boating, kayaking, fishing, and for young children.
We tented on the water front and just back from the beach on three occasions If the weather is good, this is a fantastic spot to launch the kayak and later in the day watch the sun go down.
Seems to be a bit short of bathroom space in the peak times, hence the presence of some potable toilets. The same for the communal kitchen, so you either need to be patient or avoid the congestion by having your own cooking equipment. However these are only minor matters and does not apply to self contained units and self contained mobile homes.
