We had agreed to stay in Timaru for the night, but we checked out the freedomcamps there and found that they were a bit to much like parkinglots for us.
So we went inland and ended up at this nice place. It seems like a picnicarea, but it is nicely located right down to the river. We enjoyed the last afternoon sun by the river, our children walking around in the shallow water and even caught a few very small fish in a jar. Late afternoon a group of young locals joined us in an old campervan. Since it was Saturday, we were afraid they were going to have a party, but they turned out to be very nice and we did not hear them at all.

We found it a very expensive turisty setting.
But we were there beginning of April and only saw 20-25 penguins, so I am not sure how many you will find if you go to some of the other locations around town?? A few people had told us that the penguins would be everywhere, also in the parking area. That is not the case this time og year.

Seems the flying pigs cafe is only open during summer.
We were there at the beginning of April and it had closed for the season. Our kids (4 and 6) enjoyed the fossil museum, it also has a little bookselection, so our son got some new dino-books.

Nice, nice, nice!!
Bring your lunch and a picnic blanket, many nice spots around the lake. If you have kids, don't miss the small aerial ropeway just by the water (opposite side from the church).

Perfect location if you need to return your campervan and/or go to the airport the next day.
The park seemed a bit busy with people comming and going. Our children found the playground a bit small compared to other Family Parks but they loved the ducks that walked around outside our camper in the morning. First time I have ever seen a camping area with a sauna :)
Hi Mette - thank you for your feedback. We now have some great additions to our playground including a very cool swing set and trampoline for the children to exert all that energy. Yes we do get very busy over the summer season but we hope that everyone understands this as it is the same across all of NZ at this time. Hope you had a great holiday

We stopped here becourse it was convenient on our way to Lake Tekapo.
It's a bit campsite, but not very busy in the beginning of April. Facilities are old but clean. Our children enjoyed the big playground. After a long day of driving it was nice to walk down to the river. Nice to see people fishing there. Also the water was fantastic iceblue.

The location is great!
But still, not the nicest freecamp we stayed at. Seemed that the spot is very popular with surfers and other people on daytrips. Also not the cleanest places we have stayed. Concenient if you have to be in Kaikoura the next morning, but since the beach is also nicer further north I actually wished we has stopped at one of the other freedom capms we had passed on the way down SH1.

The perfect place to enjoy Lake Pukaki incl.
the view of Mt. Cook. It is a very popular spot, but it is also big enough for many campervans. Our kids enjoyed jumping around the big rocks on the beach.

it's a parkinglot, but facilies are new and clean.
It's right next to BlueBridge ferry, so if you want to take the morning ferry it's a very convenient place to spend the night.

I think this is situated a little wrong on this map.
Acording to a local map we found, it is down Livingston Duntroon Rd. near Duntroon. Acording to the staff at the fossil museum there are also a few places down that road, where you can stop and look for fossils yourself.

We couldn't find any Freecamps around Rotorua, so we ended up staying at this Holiday Park.
It's a small camparea in very short walking distance from the lake. The staff is very friendly and helpfull. Facilities are a bit old, but clean. Our kids enjoyed the big playground.

One of the nicest places we stayed on the North Island!
Just by the lake, so nice!. We were there for Easter, so there were quit a few campers, but it's a big area, so there is lots of space.

Very popular place, but also lots of space.
After a long day of driving we arived in Hastings late afternoon. We had hoped for a nice dinner at one of the wineyards, but were disappointed to learn that almost all close at 4pm. So we decited to go to the beach. Good choice! this place had everything we needed. Right at the beach, great sunset location. And just one the other side of the street we found a few nice wineries that also have restaurants.
