Very quiet place, with lots of farm animals to see if you have children (or don't!).
Campground is located 300m on the right after the basement (where you will find showers (2$).
You need to see the warden or call the council to pay your night, 12$ pp (symbols on rankers map need to be updated ;) ) so they can give you the combination of the padlock to actually enter the camping area.
Enjoy the sunset over the sea!

Great campsite, located 30km away from AKL Central.
Good spot to start exploring the Waitakere Range.
You have to call the auckland council to book your nights (6$ pp). Located just next to a farm, as you can see on pics. The farmer was really nice, give us some advices and brochures about walks and camps around. Stayed 4 nights.
It feels like there's no one around, just a little bit noisy because of the planes taking off the international airport.
The campsite's really large, no worries about finding a place to park, with a long drop toilet (clean as usual).

Good DOC campground for the location and its 50C hot showers.
But despite the warm walcome we had by the warden, we were asked the next day (her wife?) to move out of the camp as it was 12 and we were supposed to leave by 10.30am. Never seen or read it in any doc guide, nor have been asked by doc warden in other doc campsite before.
Also asked to move the campervan because apparently we were on 2 spaces. Camp was not even half full at this time of the year.
Very rude attitude as we were with our small daughter.
So finally, we wouldnt recommend this one.

Want to spend a good time away from towns?
Here's one of the best, or perhaps the best of free doc campsite in north island.
On the bank of the river, and 10min walk fro the beach (enjoy the robinson crusoe wooden house there!)
Water taps and toilets ok.
Just before the entrance of the camp, a walnut tree is offering its frsh fruits. Enjoy!

40k on gravel road (amazing whanganui inlet + road along coast) but what a reward!
Don't be afraid as we were by the gate, it's open ;)
We stay on the first site, which can be very windy at some time. Long drop toilet, no tap water.
Whatever! The river is here to provide you fresh water!
See it melt with the high tide, really an awesome place. Walk along the montain at low tide, and feel the kiwi sense of freedom!
Light a fire at night under the wonderful sky canopy, and enjoy!
Stayed for 4 days, will def come back!

Park on grass under trees facing the lake.
Toilets and rubbish bin available.
This spot is next to the main road so unfortunately very noisy all day and night.
Was ok to spend one night before heading to Hamilton.

Woman in charge (Camp warden?) didnt say hello when we get there, kept talking with friends...
Charged 28$ for a non powered site (thank you madam for "generously" offered us not to charge our girl who is 4...).
Showers and facilities were not that clean and are getting pretty old now.
The campsite faces the lake, but in between, there's the railway, noisy.
Definetly too expensive for what they offer there.
Not recommended

Wonderful place at bill and brenda roadhouse!
Stayed a week, parked free with our campervan and just paid 5$/day to be powered.
Facilities were free to use, also you will find everything you want in their store.
Don't forget to try Brenda's pies.
15min from the sea and the hot springs.
Definitely the best place to stay since ages!

Nice spot in front of the sea and next to wineries and farmyard zoo (10min walk).
You have to be self contained as officers check.
Plenty of space but very windy when we were there, also noisy because of birds shooting and the road.
Flush toilets and rubbish disposals (recycle bins)
Not that charming but ok for a night.

Not much more to say than phil & laura.
Depending on which season you get to this campground, do NOT forget the repellant!
2 long drop toilets 100m away from the place where you park but no water tap.
As usually, the free doc campground are far way from everything, but the location worths the distance.

3.5/5
Great base to explore Cromwell, Bannockburn and its wineries.
Lots of space to park, enjoy swimming in the lake.
Toilets and rubbish bins available.
As the region, can be very hot during the day and very cold during the night!

First doc campsite experience in south island.
1hr drive from picton (gravel) but what a surprise!
A small and lovely bay with rocky beach.
No walks around but ok to spend a couple of nights.
Toilets and a small stream (go under the bridge) to pick up fresh water.
Mussels and Paua (125mm min!) at low tide ;)
