After the tranquility of the west Coromandel it came as a shock to arrive here.
Elbow-to-elbow large groups and 4WDs packed into small sites gave the impression of a camping shanty town.
We paid twice as much per night here as we had at Coromandel, and paid even more to get an 'oceanfront' van site up on the hill. Ocean view was obscured by scrub but at least it got us out of the tent city. Shame about the permanent van next door with the flashing fairy lights.
Still, it was handy to walk onto the beach and walk to the kayaking departure.
We're sorry your experience wasn't completely positive. The Beach-front sites are a popular choice for Caravans and Campervans. The proximity to the beach is unbeatable, and the extra perks of spring-water, picnic tables, and a clothesline are often welcomed. Many families congregate to Hahei for their Summer Holidays making our Resort one of the most popular holiday destinations. By the beginning of February, when schools have gone back, you'll find a more relaxed atmosphere.

What a fantastic spot.
We had spent a sunny summer day having snowball fights up Mt Ruapehu and then came down to find a campervan site for the night. We looked at the nearest park in Whakapapa but found it claustrophobic and so we drove on to Discovery Lodge - and what a great discovery! Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngauruhoe right in our faces, cows in the paddock behind us, a glorious sunset, and a bottle of wine from the bar. And hardly anyone else there. Facilities were dated but it didn't bother us.

Central location next to Kirau Park, well maintained facilities and friendly staff.
A suitably sulfurous hot pool.
Thanks for the review it is appreciated. We hope you enjoyed the time you spent in Rotorua and enjoyed the rest of your travel in New Zealand.

Our family of 4 spent 12 fantastic days in an Escape4 from Wilderness, out of Auckland.
Such a good looking vehicle compared to every other van on the road, and many other travelers stopped to admire it. Inside it is very well designed, including 4 forward facing seats up front in driving mode, a bed thats always made up and accessible, and an amazing amount of storage space. It drove more like a car than you would expect of something that size, whether on the highway or on the twistiest and narrowest part of the unsealed 309 Road on the Coromandel. It gave us nothing but pleasure to drive it and to live in it. The staff at Wilderness were welcoming and helpful. We would choose Wilderness and the Escape4 again without any hesitation.

We did the morning kayak to the cove with our daughters aged 8 and 6 (as passengers, mostly).
All the gear, great guide, beautiful place. Capuccino on the beach. Paddled into a sea cave. On the way back, our group rafted together while the guide told us stories of the Maori and European history in the area. Then we hoisted a makeshift sail to try to catch the wind back. Posted photos for us to download from Facebook. Highly recommended.

Perfect first night in our campervan at Shag Stream camp, a quiet spot by the creek with shady trees and a swimming hole.

The kids were disappointed to find the jumping pillow broken, but soon were totally immersed in the beach.
Thousands of shells and such a large tidal variation that we actually gave up walking out to the shoreline at low tide. You won't swim here but it's a great beach to explore.
Showers and toilets were immaculately kept.
Heard kiwis or wekas calling in the night.
Hi
Sorry for the pillow being broken but love that the kids enjoyed the beach, being in the country a bit it is great to hear the wildlife at night.
