We visited overnight including Kiwi spotting in the evening.

A visit and overnight stay is highly recommended - the lodge is in a stunning location with several good walks and a good variety of birdlife including Kiwi! The accommodation was basic (as advertised) but of a high standard and with nice quirky touches. The hospitality of the hosts was outstanding - really friendly, genuine and great food. Everything was very well organised. A good option for overnight stays is to visit the main Nature Reserve on Kapiti (Rangitira) on the first morning - that way you can see Hihi and Saddleback amongst other birds - and then head to Kapiti Island Nature Tour Lodge in the afternoon.
