We decided to stay there for a night because the camping with view on the lake was extremely windy that day.
This camping spot is more isolated from the wind and is really close by. The long drop toilet was super smelly but otherwose clean and with toiletpaper. There is plenty of space and space in the shade. It's close from the road but it was very quiet during the night. Would recommend for a quick stop before heading up to Mount Cook

Fine for a night and because there is not much around...
It's pretty noisy next the a busy road even at night and the public toilet is quite far. You need to cross the road first which didn't feel nice at night... Ok for one night.

Great camping for the first few days of our trip.
Has all the needed accomodations and is very close to the beach and some nice walks on Mount Maunganui.

Great free camping in the area.
Has an unbeatable view on the beach and the sunset is pretty amazing. People are actually driving up there for the sunset. We even spotted some dolphins swimming not too far from the point. The toilets are really nice and clean and you can have an outside shower if you need it! Great surfing spot as well!

We ended up there because we couldn't find anything in the area and really needed a shower.
It's a bit expensive but yeah... You can also just pay for a shower if needed!
Great facilities to cook and take a shower and just on the other side of the road from the beach. So morning swim is a great idea!

Camping in The Anau which is not too expensive and allows a nice spot with a great showerand an outside grill in order to eat something else than pasta and rice....
Made great burgers there! Necessary stop on the way to Milford Sound and coming from Queenstown as the drive is pretty long.

Good spot for a one night quick stop.
The long drop toilets where smelly but clean. The rapids do give a nice morning walk before heading out. There were a couple other campevans but not much.

Unplanned stop at this camping but it looked so welcoming that we decided the stay the night.
Would have stayed longer if we were not on a schedule the next days. The view on the beach is amazing, the camping offers great accomodations for the price and the atmosphere is really nice. The sunrise was pretty awesome too. Really recommend this place

Like the other reviews, fine for a one night spot.
It's quiet, more than enough space and the museum opens early so it's possible to get an early coffee.
The toilets outside were closed when we were there...
Great for a quick stop.

One of the few doc sites around Milford Sound.
This one is the closest and is very big. Watch out for the sandflies and the bumblebees. Come prepared!
There any many toilet spots, it gets smelly but it's clean. There is a great walk in the forest which ends up on the lake. Really recommend going through it. It's pretty amazing!

The lake looks really nice and there are spots in the shade. The toilets are really basic tho but good for a night.

A bit shady at first with people who seem to be living there and not well maintained caravans but there is more than enough space, the view is great on the beach.
It's very quiet and it as toilets as well as 'cold' showers. Fine for a quick stop for one night.

Spent a night here hoping to have a nice morning on the beach.
Unfortunately the next morning was really rainy so no walk on the beach but very clean toilet and super quiet.

Only free camping in the area halfway between Queenstown and Te Anau so it gets very quick very crowded.
Make sure you arrive early for a nice spot on the lake. The campground offer an awesome view on the lake and the mountains. There are only 2 long drop toilets so considering how many people camp there, it gets quickly very smelly but it's clean and there is enough toilet paper. Fine for a quick stop on the way to either of the towns. Actually had a night there both ways.

Only doc camping in the area so pretty crowded but there is plenty of space.
We had bad weather the first day but the shelter allows you to cook and eat in a dry space with gets really nice while chatting with other campers. The toilets are clean and there are many of them throughout the camp area. There are public showers not far from the camping as well. So perfect. There are a few walk which actually start from the camping ground. Would recommend!

Very night spot for a night.
Be careful it's full early. The toilets are nice and clean and there is a great walk to do around the beach and it offers great views. Perfect to catch the ferry or after the ferry without having to stay in the city. As I said, arrive early.

Unexpected campground in the middle of the mountain where you would think you just need to keep driving.
More people do have the same idea so arrive on time as there is not much space!
