We came to New Zealand in February of 2025.
Another couple came with us and we rented 2 rigs. Unfortunately, we ran into a few issues with the rigs throughout our 18 day rental. Leon and company were very prompt and kind in providing support with each issue to help us continue our journey. All of our problems happened because the ‘check engine’ light kept coming on. The other couple’s rig developed the issue immediately, so Leon was able to switch out their rig. Our rig had this happen 3 different times throughout our travels. Each time Leon was very prompt and knowledgeable, and we were able to get help and get the rig going again. Although these issues did not “ruin” our trip, the uncertainty of the rig’s performance caused a certain degree of apprehension. Overall, we had a fantastic time. Leon and company were very helpful.
The other issue that we had with Kiwi was in the initial rental agreement. Since we were renting 2 rigs for such an extended period, we were told that there would be a 5% discount. After our plans were made, we received an email stating that in lieu of the discount they would upgrade us to two newer rigs, and we agreed to this option. When we arrived in Auckland, we were given older units to drive. When I inquired about this, Leon informed me that in the final contract, the details were changed and we no longer had newer units or the 5% discount. This change was not pointed out either in writing or verbally. I signed the contract thinking that we had the upgrade. Although Kiwi had every right to change the contract, it was disappointing to learn that they made no effort to inform us of the change or even offer any apology.
