What a place!
Loads of character, loads of history and almost deserted. It was so quiet that we stayed in the old diggings car park after checking at the pub. Be sure to stop in for a drink and a chat, just so you know how good a pub should be.
Great spot for pictures when the pool is calm. Be lulled to sleep by the sound of banjos.

Quieter and cheaper than Akaroa.
Great kitchen/lounge - clean and tidy. We stayed here for two nights to clean up and get ready to fly out from Christchurch - only 1.5 hrs away. Nice walks close by with interesting history to boot. Next trip we'll stay for a week.

Very quiet. Very beautiful. perfect couterbalance for the Queenstown madness. I totally recommend this place.

A great find!
Cheap, very clean & tidy. Showers cost $2 but the kitchen is free. Close to Lake Clearwater and Mt Sunday and beautiful scenery.

Basic!
Toilets only, with a common room for cooking. No lights, no hot water, no facilities. However it is the most amazing spot to sleep. Great step off point for the walks and you can relax all night to the sound of avalanches. very special place.

the walks we did here were another of the big highlights of our trip.
The water colour was spellbinding and the arches were a big wow. Definitely worth the detour, don't miss it rain or shine.

Wilderness Motorhomes

We were a bit nervous having had a less than inspiring experience with another hire company in Oz, but from the very kickoff Wilderness were brilliant.
Staff were friendly yet professional and so keen to help. The van was very clean and great to drive. The drying room was a godsend.
I can't imagine anyone not being impressed by this company.
As for the South Island...We can't wait to get back again and see more of it (but don't tell the kiwis that)
