It gets crowded very quickly.
But there are some rewards. Of course there's the chance of seeing the penguins but if you're travelling with children visit the nearby park. The playground is just awesome. Your kids will love it.

Beautiful campsite right next to the stream.
You have some clean toilets and some which are more or less "dump holes". Sheltered seating areas are available. Bring insects repellent with you against the sandflies and mosquitoes.

It's right next to the street and the waterfront so you can't expect too much silence.
Wasn't very windy when we were there but that might happen. No toilets at the site. You have to search for public ones.
Right next to the spot is the awesome Te Papa museum so you should check that out.
And it's just 10 minutes to the ferry so it comes in handy when you have to catch an early sail.

This is just an amazing doc campsite.
Right in front is the beach. If you want you can go for a little hike or a little swim. The amenities are very clean and there's a sheltered big area to wash your dishes.

Great view.
Friendly and funny staff. Clean amenities. Be careful with the showers because the warm water might be a bit buggy. Therefore better carry an extra dollar for a second warm water supply (you'll get it back at the counter).

Beautiful spot not far away from Auckland and the airport.
Very handy for the first night after arrival in NZ. Reserve is closed during cold season (app. Oct. 30). But there's a free overnight stay for self contained vehicles just below the entrance.

You need to book online beforehand.
And beware of the very steep road just before the farm.
Otherwise it's a beautiful spot. Everything is quite neat and lovely.
