Massive, oversized camp sites.
Backs onto lake. Friendly and tidy owners. Only negative was strict checkout time but not a dealbreaker!

Excellent campsite, campers in two out of three spots so plenty of room during my stay.
(3 would’ve been extremely tight!) Security visited twice, once to lock toilets and once (after knocking to let you know), to lock gates. Above and beyond!

10/10 for the bushwalk.
2/10 for the “campsite”.
One of those marks are for that fact that it was gravel.
The other is for the access to the walk.
Unfortunately the site slopes very steadily towards the creek, which isn’t obvious when driving but can see from a distance. Caused havoc to my water pump.
Drop toilet was filthy, clearly had not been cleaned in long time and was unusable.
I parked on a Sunday night after Tutira up the road was closed. Therefore there weren’t trucks disturbing my sleep, they had roadworks as well which slowed everyone down. However come crack of dawn Monday morning and BRRRRR no chance of a sleep in!

Unfortunately arrived at this campsite to find the road in closed, presumably due to the lake being so full and having flooded the site.
However there was no notice on council website, they still took my $5 payment that day. Guess it’s a “donation”.

Can’t complain, this campsite has everything one needs, spaces are supersized and owners are friendly.
Great price too.

Excellent campsite, powered spaces is a bonus!
Lost one mark for the fact that these aren’t allocated or marked, so you end up with a mishmash of campers in powered spots that don’t require power. In my case, even having booked in advance I was lucky to find the last powered spot due to campers parking in wrong place.
10/10 goes to the best Kauri walk in NZ! Must see.

This is such a beautiful spot to camp, lovely and quiet, beautiful surrounds, clean facilities… museum is immaculate also despite being unfortunately closed on day I arrived.
FEES HAVE BEEN UPDATED:
$20 Powered
$15 Unpowered
Just slip cash in one of their marked envelopes if museum is closed.

Fantastic spot to camp, beautiful beach and friendly locals.
Clean toilet. Only criticism is council arbitrarily limiting to 5 extremely narrow allocated spaces, plenty of room for more and caused no issues.

Very friendly, responsive and practical owners.
GREAT price for powered site, only $21 for one person. Bonus of being the flattest campsite I’ve parked in to date, genuinely flat. Toilets and showers clean and hot! Only criticism was couldn’t find a tap to refill water, no dump station either.
Pro tip: their camp shop has the yummiest freshest eggs!!!

I am giving this place a 10 not for aesthetics but for the magic water that makes you sooooo relaxed and warm for the rest of day.
Yes you sit for 20 mins in a block of concrete, but it doesn’t ruin at all the experience or effect of the water. It is also extremely affordable and doesn’t stink like rotten eggs! Māori owners are incredibly friendly and hospitable. Loved the place! Walk is pretty cool too.

Kieran is such a lovely host and great for a chat.
Very scenic and quiet spot, share the paddock with the sheep and some adorable lambs. Nice sunset. Very affordable $15/night. Free water and a portaloo.
