Plus points for the handy location and size.
However the significant number of spaces fill up very quickly. We got one of the last spots about 5.30pm although this was during kids holidays. There’s a bin and two toilets. Toilets always very busy but were clean. Long walking distance from Wellington CBD but not impossible to do. Not very close to any shops in walking distance so stock up before you get there. Lots of vehicles leaving early hours of the morning and also bright lights from streets lights. Decent enough if you just need a stop over before the ferry to South Island. Also lots of parking spaces along the road if it’s full.

Amazing spot.
We had the DOC campsite pass so paid $6. Sites 10+ are on one side, 10&10- are on the other. 10+ gets the sun in the evening which was lovely to see but it was busy with big motor homes and caravans (kids holidays). That side also has the kitchen, hot showers and laundry. You can exchange for coins at the office, the staff member who served us was really lovely too. Check in is between 2-8pm. We did see someone coming round to check the sites. Rubbish disposal is also behind the DOC office which was really handy. Highly recommend especially if you already have the DOC pass.

Amazing spot but watch out for the gate - it’s closed at 7pm!!
We went back out for fish and chips and arrived back at 7.10 to find the gates locked (our tent about 40 mins walk to the campground). Luckily the ranger was just coming out and he let us back in. Lots of space (arrived in mid September) and there was only one other campervan. Went for a swim in the sea but it hailed throughout, not pleasant but an experience nonetheless. Amazing place for bird watching. Saw a Morepork, baby Spur Winged Plovers, Eastern Rosellas, plenty of Kingfishers and Tuis. You get woken up to the most beautiful symphony of bird songs. Toilets, cold showers, and sink area available. Had no issue booking and getting the code for the gate.

Arrived at 4.30pm on last Sunday in September.
Loads of motorhomes and campers on the lower grassed area. Parked near to the toilets on the upper section in self contained in a parking space. Really lovely lake and great spot. Unsure how many ‘official’ spaces there are but no one seemed to care.

Beautiful spot especially in the sun.
Lovely to hear the waves and great for a swim. Drop toilets and cold showers available. The water supply didn’t seem to work when we were there. Had to drive down a bit of a steep road to get there but managebale. Lots of people arriving late on in the evening. Good vibes all round.
